Writer's Block: The long and short of it

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

Longest... it would probably have to be Brisingr (book 3 of Inheritance Trilogy, Christopher Paolini). Since, yaknow, Paolini seems to believe the longer the book the better it is. That better be true for #4 because it's been WAY too long since he's reported progress on how that's going and when its official release date will be...

Shortest... hm, first one that comes to mind has to be Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck). That's more of a novella, right? Just barely 110 pages if I recall correctly. It took me about three or four days to complete (and we had two weeks for this thing. That was me trying to space it out).

Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning to acting, which of his film characters would you like to see him play first?

Lots of people were hoping to see him play Governor of California. Epic fail. He also turned in a lackluster performance as loving husband to Maria Schriver. I'm thinking he should stick to weightlifting. Or he could sell used cars.

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

I'm pretty sure the longest book was Camilla by Frances Burney, which according to one e-Book site is 358,330 words and 1012 pages, narrowly edging out Henry Fielding's Tom Jones at 352,478 words and 982 pages.

The shortest? I have no idea. I mean, when my daughter was very little I "read" her some board books that had about four pages and zero words, does that count?

What's your favorite line from a song, and why?

OK, the first one that come to my mind would be; 'Que Sera sera, whatever will be, will be' from que sera, sera because I was in a state where I don't know what I wanted to do; I choose something but it did not go the way I wanted and I dnt know if it the right choice or if i should do something else or start it again, have another chance. But it was a really bad year and I have became really depress and I just don't know what choice to make. It make me feel powerless bacause I was confuse and felt I dont' know what to do with myself then someone gave me the link to this song and it stuck with me. I then just follow my heart because it true we dnt really know what our future going to be and the choice I make might actually be wrong but it a start and it is true to my heart, it will lead me to another door and maybe that where i will belong. I still feel unsure sometime but I am glad I choose to do it again because I leran more about myself and I am happy.. for now!

He could play in any teen drama, such as Gossip Girl or 90210, or any soap opera such as Days of Our Lives (because they haven't canceled that one yet) and he'd fit right in...

He cannot turn the clock back and play a young action figure. He should do as Eastwood did and play updated, age-appropriate characters of more depth and wisdom. He probably knows this already.

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

The longest book I read, was Shogun by James Clavell. 1,152 page book that I read in the seventh grade. It took me about a year to get through it. I tried to read Gone with the Wind, which was only 960 pages, but I thought it was boring at the time. Go figure.

Shortest book I ever read was Demon in the View, by Ameila Atwater-Rhodes, which was 176 pages.

Once I had learned to read, I wasn't too big on books for kids. Young adult fiction became my favored niche, unless I was reading books on inventors scientists and art. My favorite kid's book will always be Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. The movie sucked. Don't watch it if you haven't already.

Shogun was hard to read. I had started reading Amelia when I was in the sixth grade. In the Forest of the Night was the first book. Demon in my view was something of a sequel. Shattered Mirror and Midnight Predator explore different angles of Amelia's Vampire world, and yet they all interweave together. I liked Demon in my View the best. Most likely because the self-proclaimed alpha, cruel, heartless and badass, had an ounce of compassion in him after all.

I had a Demon in my view. He's gone.

Writer's Block: Your own toy story

Did you have a favorite stuffed animal, action figure, or doll growing up? If so, what was it and what happened to it?

Yes, I had most of the set of Johnny West action figures -- they were called "dolls" back then, but dolls armed with six-shooters, knives, and rifles.  Let's see ... there was Johnny, of course, who was the John Wayne type but had a family: Jane, his wife (cue Jetsons music), two sons, and two daughters (Jay and Jamie, Josie and Janice). One of each sex was blonde, one brunette. Makes you wonder what Jane was up to with Sam Cobra, the bad guy dressed all in black, when Johnny was out on the range.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_of_the_West_%28action_figures%29

The group of figures kept expanding and we weren't exactly rich, so I never did collect the whole set. In addition to all four family members and Sam Cobra (who I remember came with a pool ball and cue. Must have been a gambler!), I had the Indians Geronimo  and Fighting Eagle, the cavalry soldiers General Custer and Captain Maddox, and -- naturally -- horses for several of them. I didn't get most of the larger accessories, such as the ranch homestead and fort, but I did manage to get the covered wagon and horse. That came out in 1968, and it was the last toy released until 1975, which was after I stopped collecting. That would mean I was around 7-10 years old when I accumulated what would have been a pretty fair set.

Despite hard play (they kicked my GI Joe's ass, by the way), I still have Johnny, in fairy decent shape, along with a few other pieces in not so good shape. Although fully articulated, they were solid molded plastic, and help up pretty well. I remember seeing this poster in the store:

Longest would probably have to be Stephen King's Dreamcatcher. It was worth the read, though. Much better than the stupid movie. I think the shortest would probably be various manga. LOL I'm not sure, really. I used to read novellas a lot in high school (which are obviously a lot shorter than novels!) but I can't recall any names. So, they must not have been too good. Unless you can count parts of a series.

Discounting children's books, the shortest book I've read is probably C.S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters, which is more a pamphlet than a book (not that this makes it bad).

The longest is definitely Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which in hindsight should have tipped me off that bad times were coming - children's books have no need to be 700+ pages.

I have a book of Edgar Allan Poe's complete works that I'd like to say I've read, but I only finished about half of it before, I guess, just putting it on the shelf and somehow never thinking to go back to it. And I've had it since middle school. So I guess the longest book I have read would be... whichever Harry Potter book is the longest, lol.

Besides a ton of kids' books, which would seem like too obvious an answer, the shortest is probably Animal Farm.

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

Well, just focusing on single books and leaving aside series like LoTR, Harry Potter, Wheel of Time, etc, my first thought for longest book was the uncut version of The Stand by Stephen King. However, this page here shows that the unabridged Count of Monte Cristo is nearly the same length, at 464,234 words versus 464,218 for The Stand, though as I've read an English translation of Monte Cristo, word lengths may vary somewhat by translation. So...I guess I have two!

As for shortest, that might be some children's picture book, but what springs to mind is the joke book Everything Men Know about Women, which aside from the cover and some excited blurbs on the back, has over one hundred blank pages inside. So I guess that's the shortest 'book' I've ever 'read.' =)

Writer's Block: The long and short of it

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

By page count, the longest was The Baroque Cycle, the shortest was a published essay by Marcel Duchamp I found in a French bookstore that was about 12 pages made of a single folded paper you cut into all old-fashioned like.

By fidgeting, irritation-laced, uncomfortable murderous rage of both boredom and sheer annoyance of generally about everything going on and every character involved stretching to a dimension beyond the time-dimension so that concepts of "long" and "short" no longer exist and the hellfire pain of present reality feels like the all-assured setting of human existence in a surreal merging of hells both Christian and Existential, I have found no definitive book, but a few like American Psycho, Rant, and Forbidden Colors come to mind.

By almost disturbingly crack-like induction of spiraling time as the sand thrown gleefully from fingers in the white far-flung absence of all cares as your life and daily concerns slip by faster than a bullet train blowing away from an atomic explosion consisting entirely of speed and squirrels on cocaine enveloping the aforementioned sand in a quake of dream-logic ecstasy, I suppose I'll nominate Snow Crash.

So... kudos to Neal Stephenson for getting both longest book by volume and shortest book by mental reckoning...I...guess?

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

I think the Bible would have to be the longest book I've read.  That would only have to be because a lot of the books in it have long chapters and some short ones.  "Ramona, the Pest" by Beverly Cleary would have to be one of the shortest books that I actually remember reading.  I read that book when I was younger, but I don't remember it being more than two hundred pages in length.

Writer's Block: The long and short of it

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

Time is only a perception, so it is on this perception, not page count, I will answer this prompt.
The longest book I ever read was Ulysses by James Joyce. It was a "new" edition and was a required review inclusion for my column, so its heft was emphasized be time constraint. I remember that I started my review with the statement "There are two kinds of people in the literary world, those who will tell you they have read James Joyce "Ulysses" in its entirety with relish, and those who prefer truth to pretension." Someday I may read it again, just to see if my opinion has changed.

The shortest is tough, but recent (read for me last two years) books that were devoured so quickly I only wished for more deliciousness and therefore had re-read and savor again and again are James Owen's "Here There Be Dragons", Claudia Emerson's "late wife",  and most recently a collection called "Bordertown", in particular the final story by Charles de Lint.

Longest: Atlas Shrugged (1,069 pages, although other editions are longer). I read it in two months during senior year of high school.

Shortest: Either Of Mice and Men or Anthem. I can't really recall.

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet.

I don't think I can identify one book as being the shortest. Siddhartha was a quick read but something like a Magic tree house book is way shorter. I think the cardboard books I read to my son as a baby were the shortest.

Writer's Block: See the music

What's your favorite music video of all time?

My favorite music video of all time is definitely "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga. It's like a miniature film, with a plot and characters. It is truly a masterpiece. In the video, their are 13 hidden dead divas, showing a theme of celebrity tragedy. It is set in a mansion, and we see beautiful flowers and extravagant surroundings as well as lavish interior decoration inside the mansion. Gaga and her "boyfriend" are on the bed and kissing like the world will end. He picks her up and carries her to the porch, where he tosses her off the balcony. Her body is photographed as she lies unconscious at the bottom. She then returns to us in a black limousine, wearing a metal body cast, on crutches, with a wheelchair. The video goes on showing her in many elaborate outfits, and showing thirteen dead women, some bleeding gold fluid, others shot in the head or strangled. (You can see them here, on my tumblr blog: http://monstergagaholic.tumblr.com/post/6282414071/the-thirteen-dead-girls-in-the-paparazzi-video ) Gaga ends up back with her boyfriend, who is reading the paper on the couch. She goes up to get him a drink, and poisons it with powder from a ring she is wearing. He takes a sip, and falls limp. We hear a telephone ring, and a voice say "911 emergency", and she replies, "I just killed my boyfriend.". The paramedics come and take the body away, and Gaga's image is restored, and the press loves her once again. However, she is sent to jail, where she takes explicit mug shots and we see her with purple stains from her eyes, most likely from the line, "purple teardrops I cry". The video ends with her exiting the mug shot and "TO BE CONTINUED". This is by far my favorite music video. Truly a spectacular piece of work, one of Gaga's best!

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

I dunno about the shortest book I've ever read... just this weekend I looked at a book that had about 10 pages and no words, the art told the story, I suppose that could count as a short book.

The longest single book was probably The Deed of Paksanarrion by Elizabeth Moon.  Over a thousand pages of tiny fonted print.

And then there's book series... I've read the entire Harry Potter series at least 4 times.  Then there's the Sword of Truth books by Terry Goodkind which is around 9 or 10 books each with more than 300 pages.  I've recently been sucked into the Lupus books written by Eileen Wilks, which I've read the first 7 books and now have to wait until November for the 8th to come out.

I've read a whole lot since Maddie was born in March, not much else to do when half the day is spent sitting on the couch with a baby attached to my chest.  We'll just say that I've been very glad to have discovered Free Friday on my nook, I get one free book a week yay!

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

I really do not count pages much. I also tend to be reading at least two books at once and read whenever I have a few spare minutes. Therefore, it makes the question as stated hard to answer. Thinking about it in a slightly different way the shortest amount of time I have spent with a book has been with the myriad of them that I have picked up - looked at a page or two - and then returned to the shelf unpurchased. The longest amount of time I ever spent with a book is a toss up. I spend one hell of a long time trying to read Finnegans Wake but I was defeated in the end so I am not sure it counts. That damn book is just way to much smarter than I am. The most time I spent completing a work was with Alfred Korzybski's book Science and Sanity. A hard book but a rewarding one.

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

Longest:

Vanity Fair: A Novel without a Hero by William Makepiece Thackary

http://www.manybooks.net/titles/thackeraetext96vfair12.html

Though some fantasy novels might technically be longer; I'm not sure about door stoppers like Martin's "Storm of Swords". The Lord of the Rings is technically one book, but I think I'm splitting hairs now. I consider a book what I got my filthy little paws on at a given time or see first.

though
Part One of "The Faerie Queen" by Edmund Spenser certainly FELT longer than all of the above. It's a poem, man. A long, long, long looooooooong poem.

Shortest:

When does a novel become a novella? I'm assuming it's "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, because it's technically a novel, but it's of novella size. I'm not one to mince words as to what constitutes the novella/novellette/novel, all I know is I am capable of reading something short, and do it on occassion.

http://www.searchlit.org/novels/465.php

So Animal farm is essentially 1/10 the size of Vanity Fair. To be fair, Vanity Fair was printed as a serial, and not meant to be read all at once.

His Dark Materials, The Stand, The Witching Hour & The Fucking Count of Monte Cristo were all about the same length. Monte Cristo was the biggest bitch of them all to read though!

Shortest book that I can recall is the one I JUST finished, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Overrated new age tripe!

I LOVE reading. :) I think I am the second most well-read person I know (1st is the history major who works at a book store!). I don't say that to be all braggy, it's just true... I make a point to try to cultivate literacy with my slow but steady work at chipping away at the BBC's Big Read list. :)

Don't know quite what to do today. Here's what needs to happen, in no particular order:

-diaper laundry
-dishes
-run 4 mi (didn't make it yesterday, got a headache & felt super nauseous)
-get extension cord, creamer, milk, gifts

?? What else. I guess I could throw this other laptop on ebay/craigslist. Or wash my car, if the weather holds. Or hang up that damn shelf... I shouldn't do that on my own though. Anything with levels involved is dicey.

Bah. I should go run, like now. While I feel good and before the events of the day get in my way or make me tired. Blaaaaaaaah.

The longest book was "Son Of A Witch" or maybe it just felt long? Took me weeks to read it whilst other books usually take me a week at most! It was so hard to read because i didn't really care for Elphaba's son,Liir but I was determined to finish it since I was hoping she wasn't really dead..Wishful thinking.
The shortest was "Aradia". Not a very long book but for me packed alot more in than the others and I love reading mythology so I couldn't put it down.
I thought this would've been a hard question for me considering how many books i get through within a year. A mind of useless information and facts.

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?
Well, the Bible would be the longest, though it's actually a collection of books, and not meant to be read front to back like a novel. The next longest I ATTEMPTED was War and Peace, which I slogged half way through. At that point, there was still no observable 'plot', nothing more than a litany of parties and their attendants and manners. I didn't care enough about any of the characters to continue punishing myself.

Writer's Block: Your own toy story

Did you have a favorite stuffed animal, action figure, or doll growing up? If so, what was it and what happened to it?

I had two favorite toys as a little girl. My stuffed dog (he was a Gernam Shepard) named Koko, Jr. after my real dog, Koko who was a Shepard-Collie mix and the best dog that ever lived.

But my very favorite toy was one of those spring rocking horses. Man, I loved that thing. At four years old, I would drag that thing outside and ride it in the backyard or out front on the sidewalk. And of course I rode it in the house all the time. Unfortunately, one of the sons of my dad's best friend rode it too hard and broke it. I was devastated, and have never really forgiven him. LOL

Writer's Block: The long and short of it

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

"The Stand." (The unbridged version managed to beat out  "Gone With The Wind.")  I tried to read "War and Peace" once, but I couldn't keep the characters straight, so I gave up.

"Please and Thank You" (Spiderman and Friends, currently Grace's favorite book. It's about 5 pages long.)

Writer's Block: The long and short of it

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?
the longest was definitely Harry Potters and Sourcers stone . and the shortest ? when I read Night by Eli Wiesel for Junior college . I love that Jodi Picoults boos are so long because you get alot of physical book for your money . well MOm came home to change in hopes of going to the Yearbook Lunch - Im hoping thats a good sign for NYc tommorrow . I havent heard from her since before 9 tho . we shall see . I just dont want this dad thing to ruin my summer but Mom gets to go to chicago - thats so un fair . Im even thinking already of looking up another NYC trip just in case we dont go tommorrow . I dont get why everything I look forward to for so long always gets sabotaged by someone else : Meeting Taylor HAnson in 2007 , Trishes party , and now this . Im determined to make Ma and I have shifts -Im NOT letting Mom run off all summer and me stay home just because shes the only driver now .. theres NO WAY of that . Im not going to become and play nURSE WHile Mom has fun its so unfair . Of COurse I Know thats what Kathie would like , but Im putting my foot down finally. Im either going or we're not going at all .
and the worst? he cant drive and he has to do the head thing for 2 months basically from now til the cruise .. so if all else does truly fail , at least the cruise and the American Idols tour are definites and the possible fall US HAnson tour -- cant wait for all that for sure ! im sure Lauren and Scotty will even look better to him . :)

Writer's Block: The long and short of it

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

I think stephenie meyer's the Host was the longest at 7 or 800 pages. It was 7 or 800 brilliant pages though; well, actually, the last 500 were better, it take a while to get into it but after chapter 7 it is all a book should be.

Oliver by Charles Dickens is pretty long too and Wuthering Heights by that Bronte chick also felt like forever reading but I still enjoyed both, putting them in my top ten books for sure.

The shortest book I read (bar the baby ones) is probably a 56 page one my nan gave me. It ws a 50's tale about a girl that gets a job at a cafe and doesn't tell her friends so they get suspicious thinking she has a boyfriend. They all end up laughing about it. It was odd.

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

I'm surprised to find that the longest was Stephen King's "The Stand" (unabridged/expanded) at 1141 pages. I would have thought "Pillars of the Earth" was longer.

Shortest is probably "The Two Dead Girls",  92 pages, the serialized version of "The Green Mile" (ironically also by Stephen King). He published 92--114 page portions in serial format once a month in 1996.

Writer's Block: The long and short of it

What's the longest book you've ever read? What's the shortest?

I think War & Peace is the book with the most pages that I've read, although Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows could probably come close.  (I've never compared the page count.)  Now, the 'longest' - as in "when will this story ever be done and why am I still reading it?" - that would be Dune.  I read it because it was "a classic!" "not to be missed!" "a must for any sci-fi fan!". That was back in the days when I was a lot younger and more easily swayed by what critics were saying.  In truth, I found it nearly as tedious to plow through as books I've been required to read in school, like The Old Man & The Sea, and considerably longer.  I remember heaving a great sigh of relief when I finally finished it.  I think that was the last time I let myself feel compelled to read all the way through a book I didn't like just because other people said it was good.

I expect some of my early childhood books, or those I read to my daughter when she was little, are among the shortest I've read.
