Writer's Block: Doing the time warp

If you could travel through time with someone you know, who would you choose, and why?

I'd choose my friend Ege because she'd my most awesome Whovian friend I ever have! She even bought sonic screwdrivers for us (for herself 10th's and 11th's for me) and we would be a perfect time traveller couple.

Id choose my husband Jesse. I enjoy learning new things and traveling and my husband is the perfect person to do that with. He supports me no matter what I choose to do and we trust each other. He also has a sense of humor that matches mine and we can really have a good time together.

If you could travel through time with someone you know, who would you choose, and why?

Only doing this because Dad and I talk about this from time to time.

So if it isn't obvious, it would be my father. And while it's also obvious I'd want to go forward in time to see what happens, see how long the planet has before we finally kill it, when we finally get out to REALLY travel in space, see the first woman president, see what Fuzzy looks like when she grows, see where my descendents might end up, blah blah blah.

But mostly, I want to go back. I want to go back to times where we came from, literally. See how things like religion and beliefs are born. See the Coliseum being populated by Romans, though preferably NOT at a "feed the Christians to the lions" thing, if that indeed happened, which wouldn't in anyway surprise me. I want to meet my grandfather who died in 1963, long before I was a glimmer in my parents' eyes. I want to see what happened to the lost colony at Roanoke. I want to talk to the Founding Fathers, which is all kinds of obvious if you know me and my political and religious leanings. Jesus Christ. Alexander the Great. Cleopatra. Eleanor Roosevelt. John Sevier and Peter Stuyvesant, two of my ancestors of historical significance in North America.

I'd like to see how far into North America the Vikings might have made it. To see the earliest ancestors of Native Americans make their way across the Bering Sea. See a dinosaur or more. Try and follow immigrations out of Africa. What Pangaea looked like.

I'd like to go to Woodstock, live in San Francisco with the dirty hippies (I say that affectionately ;), see The Beatles' last concert at Candlestick Point. Visit Europe during the time of Beethoven, Bach, Verdi, Lord Byron, Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth, Marcus Aurelius, Caligula, Charlemagne.

My maternal great-grandmother was a foundling; where is her biological family from? Did my paternal great-grandfather really travel by horse and buggy and camp-out in the middle of nowhere because he'd heard a car was driving by sometime soon? Did Dad really just flip a coin to decide whether or not he should go into Labor Relations or Administration of Justice, a flip without which I wouldn't be here because my parents would have never met?

Well, I guess I should go back to packing and getting ready for the weekend. Clothes are mostly done. But there is still makeup to decide upon and gather, jewelry to choose, and adhesive bras to try on in hopes they are more comfortable than a strapless. Move some music onto my mp3 player that I AMAZINGLY found the cord for in a random box of my crap that's been collecting dust under my bed for the better part of 2 years. I cannot WAIT until I can get into my stuff in the storage unit!!

Hunter, all the way. Then I would make sure the really bad ones died, while saving and making good with the not-so-bad guys. Then when the time calls, I'd have the most bad-ass back-up ever to call in and save me when I need it.

Or I'd die on my first mission by doing something stupid. Could go either way, really.

What is your LEAST favorite movie of all time, and why?

As far as movies I actually sat all the way through, the worst one I can think of is "Private School" a teen sex comedy with Phoebe Cates that came out when I was in high school. I'd describe it but... it's a teen sex comedy, that says it all really.

(I have a vague memory of posting about this before, and someone commenting that they loved Phoebe Cates. And she's probably great, really, just that movie really sucked and I would have walked out if I hadn't been there on a date.)

Coming in second is "Up in Arms," an old film which I saw on television. It featured Danny Kaye, Donna Shore, and I believe Frank Sinatra and... weird stuff happened and it was really boring and stupid. I mentioned it to my father and he said something like "How do you think I feel? I paid money to see it when it came out."

The first one that comes to mind is Swordfish. I thought it was retarded. John Travolta is douchebag in that movie and his hair looks fucking dumb. And the whole plot of the movie bugged me. Oh, okay, he wants to deter enemies of the country by doing horrendous acts. Even though he's not supposed to exist or whatever cliche you want about top secret government sanctioned counter terrorism programs, it was stupid that he had to rob a bank. It's the US government. It's not like they couldn't just fund the shit themselves and keep it secret. There was no need for the bank to be robbed. The phrase "With friends like you, who needs enemies?" comes to mind.

I suppose the only thing that did it for me in that movie was Hugh Jackman NOT being Australian or Wolverine.

I think it would have to be someone I didn't care for, who probably deserved a fate worse than death. I would travel back in time with them, to like the age of the dinosaurs or the time of The Black Death, and then leave them there. After that I would come back and probably watch TV or go shopping or something. If it were possible to have a layover on the way back, I'd like to stop at the 1893 Chicago's world fair and check it out.

Man. I've seen so many movies, I can't think off the top of my head which one was the most fail. I hated the ending to Terminator Salvation. I'll give you that.

I can't really tell you, aside from the fact the Expendables was poorly done, and Street Fighter BUTCHERED the hell out of the series (but that was to be expected).

Death to Smoochy.

Seriously, don't even talk to me about this movie.

I have heard in recent years that Jon Stewart is in it. I can't confirm this because I will never, ever, ever, ever watch it again.

On a related topic, tomorrow I am going to see Cars 2, a.k.a. the sequel to the blandest movie I've ever seen! I am very much looking forward to the Toy Story short. I am less looking forward to the scene in which Mater uses the restroom just so the filmmakers can fit in the required OH THOSE WACKY JAPANESE TOILETS joke. WHY DOES A TOW TRUCK HAVE TO USE THE WASHROOM SERIOUSLY THIS UNIVERSE MAKES NO SENSE-----

Writer's Block: Toy box travesties

What childhood toy did you desperately want that your parents refused to give you? Do you still think about getting one?

I wanted a Power Ranger Dragon Dagger. It was a knife/flute, made of plastic and about a foot long. It took batteries, and had at least 3 buttons you could play with to make different melodies JUST LIKE IN THE SHOW. I asked for it for Xmas SO many times, either in 2nd or 3rd grade. It was at the top of my list. That year, I got 6 baby dolls instead. Mom wanted me to play with 'girls things' like babies, make-up, and clothes, and not be interested in 'boys things' like video games, superheroes, or fun.

Hell yes I still think about getting one.

Which book do you find yourself regularly rereading, and why?

I really wish I had an answer to this one. I love reading, but rarely do I find myself reading the same book twice. I must have read my favourite book (20'000 Leagues Under the Sea) about a hundred times when I was a kid, but haven't opened it in at least a decade. That book inspired my love of the paranormal, Earth mysteries, science fiction, and narwhals.

Wow, it would be hard to pick just one....but I think most recently that would have to be The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Talk about a total waste of celluloid... AND such a total waste of what was a glowing talent that was snuffed out far too soon -- Heath Ledger.

I wanted to love that film. Impossible. It was awful before he died and it was abysmal after his loss because you could read the grief all over the other actors.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss $7.50 goodebye and I will never be able to reclaim the precious minutes of my life that I lost on that film.

What is your LEAST favorite movie of all time, and why?

Some movies are so stupid, or so poorly done that they actually become cult classics, such as, "Galaxy of Terror". The worst movies don't sink to that level. Instead they settle somewhere just below the mid-range. I don't know if we should include so-called "documentaries" in this discussion, but the movies of Michael Moore are some of the worst productions ever to flash across the big screen.

American shitpie. For all obvious reasons.

America is a really poor country. You just have to watch "They live" to understand. Americans are pigs. Where you would think that all capitalists are, that's not the case. At the very least filthy, rude, neurotic New Yorkers are. Is it any woner that the WTC was attacked? All you need to do is go to one of their homes. Of course a real New Yorker will never invite you to their stinky 200 year old styrofoam box. Only a truly wealthy one that is protected by a swarm of lower-standing stooges who's only option is to make a living by protecting the pig system.

You can't really call Europeans capitalist-pigs. Perhaps just capitalist. But never fear, you always have the freedom. The freedom to be homeless or watch others enjoy their "freedoms" on TV. Unless... you're truly wealthy. Then all the doors will open to you. Why is that? It's the same reason Americans like jewelery. Same reason they don't like Latino's. It's because they pretend that they are not scumbag slimeballs who are really full of shit. . . Think of the Simon character in True Lies. Yes... Car salesman... Carlos.. Very American name. And they like to think that they are superior to someone. They are White Americans. Funny. They live in their American caves without a passport, watch caveman sports and never get their head out of their ass, until they are old enough to die.

...Well maybe the bra unzipping contest wasn't so bad.

This one is easy for me. Buffalo 66, easily the most overrated movie in the whole exapnse of cinema history.

I'm sure this opinion probably offends most of my friends list, since so many people seem to think this is a great movie, much to my confusion. This shameless regurgitation of asinine independant movie cliche's was a trail for me to endure, especially when Vincent (I wish I was David Lynch) Gallo shamelessly rips off Blue Velvet.

It would be just another crappy movie for me, but the fact that everyone thinks it's so good makes it extra aggravating. :P

Ugh, I have two!

For the longest time it was 'Mortal Kombat: Annihilation'.  I love Johnny Cage.  Used to watch the first movie at least twice a week as a kid, I loved it that much.  I rocked that character when we played on my old Sega genesis, too, lol.  When the movie sequel came out I was the first in line at the theater!  Then, like two minutes into the film, I watch my favorite boy get crushed to oblivion.  Bam.  Just like that.  He didn't even really get a wicked fight scene.  I sat in stunned shock for a while, then kept telling myself he'd come back, then got red in the face I'm sure, then spent the entire rest of the movie being so angry that I don't even remember what happened for the rest of that hour and half to two hours of my life.  That movie doesn't exist for me.

A more recent film?  'Avatar: The Last Airbender'.  Worst.  Movie.  Ever.  They couldn't even pronounce the characters' names right!  For god's sake, it was a cartoon for three years!  It's not like mispronouncing something you read in a book, we all heard those names for three years!  Plus the editing was all over the place, key plot sequences were utterly destroyed, important events were left out, plus, of course, the casting was all wrong.  After it was over I went on a three hour rant in honor of the three years of original show.  My friend who used to watch the cartoon with me was privy to said rant, then went and watched the movie anyway out of simple curiosity, then the second he got out also proceeded to rant at me about it for another few hours.  Yeah.  You suck Shamalan.  Leave my cartoons alone.

My least favorite movie is called Crash. I don't understand why we had to watch it, but my Criminal Law teacher (the most foul-mouthed man I've ever met) insisted we watch it. Then he insisted we write a response to the movie, but we aren't getting credit for doing it. Tell me, why should I do the work if I'm not going to get graded for it? Seriously, though, I hated that movie. I suppose I'm a romantic, but I like my movies to be entertaining, not tragic and racist. Never again.

Livejournal Writer's Block question of the day: What is your LEAST favorite movie of all time, and why?
Bull Durham is both my least favorite and my most favorite movie. For our very first date, Rich asked me to go see Bull Durham. He's thinking sports flick, of course. Well, if you've seen it, you know baseball is really the LAST thing Bull Durham is about. It was embarrassing, particularly for a first date movie. Inappropriate for Christians, certainly. Yet neither of us wanted to leave, since we were enjoying being together so much.

So we just focused on holding hands.

Blessings,

What is your LEAST favorite movie of all time, and why?

Just ONE?!?!

Ha, my journal, I'm answering the way I want.

I hate:
My Best Friend's Wedding
Top Gun
(anything with Tom Cruise, really, with the exception of The Outsiders, which thankfully he's only in for a few minutes...he's sooooooo overrated)
Dr. Zhivago
Eat, Pray, Love
The Back-Up Plan
Clash of the Titans (2010)
Shakespeare in Love

any movie that's a remake of a TV show (with the exception of The Addams Family movies)
The Ugly Truth (or anything with Katherine Heigl, I find her soooo unappealing/unlikable as an actress)
Nine
Moulin Rouge
The Lady in the Water

Why? Boring, stupid plots, poorly acted, BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE IT.

I'm sure there are A TON more. Maybe I'll come back & add to the list as I think of them.

The World According to Garp by Robin Williams. This was early in his career and we thought it would be a comedy. Instead it was about these two "free spirits" who followed no rules of decency and acted like rabbits in heat. My 16 yr. old daughter and I walked out after about 15 minutes, when we thought it couldn't get any worse and it did.

Well, the 1995 Casper movie for one. I spent Seven dollars watching that movie, and I thought it was so retarded. I felt sorry for the people who created it. Another one was Pokemon the first movie. Constantine.

I love Hellblazer.  The movie was supposed to be based on the Hellblazer series, but it was a complete train wreck.  It had very little in common with the books, which have so many stories that would make great movies.  Plus, it just wasn't a very good movie.

Also, they took John Constantine, an amazing and complex character, and cast Keanu "I couldn't act like I was falling if you pushed me off a cliff" Reeves to play him.

Basically, they took what could have been an epic movie, based on a long-running and beloved book, and turned it into a joke.

What is your LEAST favorite movie of all time, and why?

Hands down, City of Angels.  I looooooved this movie; I loved everything about it.  The two and a half hours flew by like the blink of an eye...right up until the end.  I was so outright LIVID after the end of that movie, that I actually swore off movies for about a year.  I loved the music that had been released before the film came out (GooGoo Dolls and Sarah MacLachlan), but I can't even listen to them to this day without being angry.  I live in the real world, ok?  RL sucks, I am well aware.  I don't want to watch shitty RL on the big screen.  I want an escape for a few hours.  If I actually make the time to sit down and waste two hours of my life that I'm not busting my ass, I want to walk away feeling recharged and hopeful, not depressed because EVERYTHING SUCKS.  Yeah, that was my take-away from this movie.  I hate it.

I don't know if I have an "Argh, I hate this." Because usually what I do is lose interest and turn it off - unless I'm in a theater, then I paid good money and will sit and complain about it afterwords unless I get my money back.

A movie I tried to watch and kept getting bored with is Jim Henson's "The Dark Crystal" which like, everyone loves, but I tried to watch it when I was like, 12-13 and babysitting this one kid, and it would put me to sleep, and I'd have no idea what is going on.

A movie I've seen, start to finish? Probably some romantic comedy, like, "27 Dresses" but the thing with me is, that I try to avoid movies like that. Movie I didn't care for in my genre? Transformers 2 or Spiderman 3, but I think those two are universally despised anyhoo.

Probably Lady In The Water. It was so terrible I could recognize how terrible it was when I was eleven and my favorite movies were Catwoman and Æon Flux (which are also pretty bad, haha). I haven't watched it in years, so I don't remember exactly why I thought it was terrible... it just didn't make any sense, and none of the characters were likable. Also, I don't think there was an explanation for why the water lady's hair kept changing color, and that really bothered me.

Another movie that I thought was pretty bad was X-Men: The Last Stand. X2 was pretty good so I think I was expecting them to get better, but then they didn't... Thank God for First Class.

Also, The House of Mirth with Gillian Anderson. Huge train wreck of a movie where the main character dies of laudanum seconds before the hero comes to rescue her. When I want to convey to gwisteria that she shouldn't watch a movie I tell her its "House of Mirth".

Zardoz (1974) i am a fan of Sean Connery, but this has to be the absolute worst sic-fi ever. It had an interesting concept of two social classes separated by religion and protagonist determined to shake up the status quo...interesting starting point on paper, but so far beyond camp on film as to be utter garbage. I read one fact about the production that it had a million dollar budget in 1974, which is pretty amazing when you compare it to Star Wars which came out four years later in 1978. Sorry Sean, this one was a bomb.

Kid in King Arthur's Court. I'm a big fan of Arthurian legend and this just screwed that over completely. And its not that I can't handle reimaginings; I have a deep love for BBC's Merlin and even Disney's Avalon High.  But this movie did not care about the legend at all, it was just a way of drawing people in. Oh yeah. That's was a bad movie...except for the costuming and makeup. The characters were "WOW!", the story (or what passed for a 'story') was disposable.

Without a doubt, The Blair Witch Project.  That was the most boring, UNSCARIEST, worst loss of money I have EVER experienced.  After all the hype, I thought it would be good, but...living near cemeteries all my life...it takes more than a shaky camera and someone saying OMG every ten seconds to scare me.  This film, to me, was a waste of time and film.

Pretty Woman. Appalling premise. Objectifies and commodifies femininity and taught a generation of women to aspire no higher than feisty but ultimately submissive handmaiden. The Julia Roberts character is basically an early WAG prototype. The Richard Gere character seems to have no redeeming features whatsoever. And the whole thing peddles a candy coated, 'lifestyle choice' interpretation of prostitution which is incredibly reductive and damaging. I have no idea why this film has become such a cult classic - it even had Roxette on the soundtrack for crissakes - but I think we are overdue an almighty backlash rather than the promised and depressingly predictable re-make.

I was so annoyed that I spent 2 hours of my life suffering through a mediocre at best film just to have the entire thing destroyed by the main character totally betraying his entire motivation throughout the whole film destroyed in the last five minutes. This is the defining example in what is wrong with Hollywood and writing in general these days. DO NOT SPEND TWO HOURS DEVELOPING A CHARACTER'S MORAL COMPASS AND THEN TOTALLY THROW IT OUT THE WINDOW FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER BECAUSE THE TEST AUDIENCES WANTED A "HAPPIER" ENDING!

In other news, I have lots to tell you but have just been slow to get around to updating. I'll talk with you all soon. Until then, love to you all and I will talk to you again soon.

TTFN!

Blair Witch Project

I'd read that this was such a cool and scary movie that I thought why not? I don't normally watch horror movies but this one was billed as something really great done by film students.

Right!

I read a joke about it later that said they had a $10,000 budget and they spent $400 to rent a camera and $9600 on booze and drugs. I'd beleive it.

The movie was silly. The only thing the actors were capable of was saying the f word every other word and there was no story... well, maybe Hansel and Gretel. Most of the movie was various shots of the ground. The ground when they stood still, the ground when they ran... I told my daughter she should get the video cam and run in the woods for a bit and maybe we could sell it for thousands of dollars.

The theater was packed when we saw it and people actually stood up and booed at the end. I've never been a film that happened at before or since. It was stupid and a waste of time.

Я бы отправила некоторых людей с такое путешествие. Правда, с ними бы не поехала. А так - можно. Что какое-то время их не видеть.)))

At a guess, Signs.

Aliens invade, they don't use weapons (like say, dropping rocks from orbit), they don't wear cloths, and water is acidic to them.

That's almost as stupid as trying to stop a lava flow by making a human chain.

Almost.

Or maybe it was the War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise. The aliens arrive millions of years ago and just hang around and wait? WTF?

I dodged The Last Airbender and The Happening.

I think it might've been The Pledge with Jack Nicholson. Fifteen minutes in and I knew I was ready to go, but friends had bought my way in and they seemed content to watch until the final black, depressing end scene, so I was stuck.

Runner up might be Lord of Illusions that I saw in the dollar theater in Sarasota. And that one mostly irritated me because it could've been very cool, but for whatever reason it just kinda wasn't.

I've seen a ton of bad movies, but the one that had me walking away is easy -- Twilight.

Yep, the first time I tried to watch the damn thing my eyes ached they rolled so much and I shut the damn thing off 20 minutes in. There was no
chemistry between the two leads, the acting was stilted at best, the make-up was...well you get the idea. I'm a fan of vampires and vampire movies, but that was the first time I threw my hands up and walked away. Sometimes bad movies are amusing. Hell I go on B-movie binges sometimes just to relax. But in my opinion there was nothing--and I do mean nothing--redeeming about this one.

And before you jump my shit folks--I did go back a few months later and watch it in its entirety. Of course, it was the RiffTrax version I managed to slog through. *snickers*

Ok, this is an easy one.  ALTHOUGH I love Viggo Mortenson a mucho lot, I hated the movie The Road.  It was good acting, but it was the most depressing movie I've ever seen.  It felt like someone was sucking the happiness out of my life for the entire movie.

If you haven't seen it... well, if you need a depressing movie, there ya go.  Otherwise, give it a miss.

2012.
I can't even explain how shitty that movie. I actually walked out of the theater and I've never done that before.

A very close second is Moulin Rouge.
It was just pure crap. Nicole Kidman isn't my favorite actress first of all and her singing for 2 hours made me want to rip my ears out.
