Writer's Block: No. 1 hits

Which is your favorite classic Beatles’ song, and why?

There's a few near the top, but I'll pick "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" in this case.  I find the lyrics to be quite relevant to certain recent goings-on.  I'd also like to add I prefer Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam's cover of this song just a bit more to the original.

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? Was it any good?

Chinese pasta with seafood. I ate it on July 1st (I remember the day very well...) at a fanmeeting in Warsaw. We were in Galeria Mokotów on the restaurant level and I had many to choose from, but I chose to be adventurous and eat the weirdest Asian thing available. I'd never eaten seafood, so I bought this. It was, ugh... just... delicious... so delicious that I couldn't eat it and some other girl was happy to finish it.

There were... fragments of very small octopuses there. And calamari, which was the best of it all I think, but looked weird. And there were small cooked mussels.  And prawns. I hate prawns.

I only knew what prawns and octopuses were; about the rest I asked girls sitting by me. It looked really scary, like some cooked alien organs to me... My imagination tried to help me find out what sea creature it could be. I picked a mussel up and said, 'What is this? A seahorse?'

Writer's Block: Going the distance

Would you uproot your life and move to another city for someone that you love?

Absolutely. Without a second of hesitation. Love is more important than all the little things put together because it is all the little things in two peoples lives combined into one.  It is worth the effort and sacrifice so long as they would do the same for you. Plus life is too short to give up on the things you feel passionately about for the sake of convenience and pride.  Screw pride and take the hard way because life isn't fair and all is fair in love and war, so fighting like hell is required.  And if that means that you quit your job, sell your house, and say goodbye to your family, then that is what your love requires.  It is really very subjective though, it hangs in the balance of how much in love with someone a person is. You really have to be so head over heals that they override all selfish thoughts and actions, your id does  not have the power on you like it once did, and you wouldn't want it to change back.

Ahh. L'amour. C'est magnifique.

Love always,

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? Was it any good?

The owners of a company we were pitching for advertising took me and my friend Luis out to dinner.  We run a lingerie trade news website.  The owners were a Chinese couple who took us to a "Real" Chinese restaurant.

There were only two non Chinese people in there, me and my Luis.  We got to try a lot of strange and cool things, but the weirdest was a fish Eye Ball.  And it was as disgusting as you would imagine.

The whites of the eyes had a cakey, cremey consistencey, and tasted like fish cheese.  Underneath the cakey layer of the fishy, cheesy substance was a hard center that I didn't expect and it nearly knocked out a filling. I imagine.

Overall a pretty strange and not so pleasant experience.

Well, what truly counts as being "weird"?  I hate it when people assume that just because a type of food is unfamiliar to them, that there's something "weird" about it.  That's the way my brother views all foreign food - he's in his early 20s and never eaten a curry because it's "weird" to him.  I'm pretty adventurous, and willing to try almost anything once.  I guess in terms of things I couldn't just go down to the supermarket and pick up anytime I felt like it, the most unusual (for lack of a better term) food I've eaten is the French tourist classic - snails and frog's legs.  The snails were good, I'd happily eat them again, and as for the frog's legs, OMG yum.  I would love to taste them again!

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? Was it any good?

Sushi. Cold raw fish.
Zero appeal.

I mean, cold fish doesn't even taste like anything! So then you have to smear wasabi all over everything, and I don't like spicy food.
And seaweed? Honestly? The only reason Japanese people started eating that in the first place was that if a fisherman didn't catch anything, there's no way he could afford rice pre-Meiji. It was seaweed or nothing. And even then, it was an awfully close call.

(I tend not to be very adventurous, food-wise. So I know sushi is pretty commonplace, but I still find it wierder than escargot, which is tough, but a lot like oysters, and it comes with garlic-butter sauce which is awesome and great for dipping.)

Where do you see yourself in five years or where don’t you see yourself? Why?

I can look at this in many ways.

Financially, I should be in better shape.  Currently, I'm working on being out of debt(completely, including mortgage) in ten years.  In five years, I hope to have all the 'little' debts-i.e. credit cards-paid off.  Once this happens, I'll be a much happier and much less stressed person.

Professionally, I'll probably still be where I am at.  This may be a good or bad thing, depending on the day you ask me:)  I honestly love what I do, but some days I hate my job.

Personally, I'll still be married to the same man.  I may have more grandchildren-but if so, probably only one or two more at the most.  However, I will probably have more babies in my life at 2-3 good friends will be starting families in the next couple years.

Where do you see yourself in five years or where don’t you see yourself? Why?

That's been kind of fun to think about this morning as in 5 years my daugter will have graduated high school and gone on to college so theoretically I could do/be whatever.... hhmmm.....

However, common sense says I'll likely still be doing what I'm doing now, living life and mostly enjoying it right here where I am today.

Where do you see yourself in five years or where don’t you see yourself? Why?

Well, where I don't see myself is Louisiana...short of winning a lottery.  So I've kind-of given up on that idea and hope.

Besides most of my friends are up here. Why go there to live?

I guess I see myself still here, plodding along. I'm at a stage in my life where its just putting one foot in front of the other and seeing what life brings along. No big plans. No big aspirations. Just living out the rest of my life at a nice even keel. Preferably with as little upheaval as possible and maybe an unexpected adventure or two...

I find myself missing Chicago. But living there is WAY too expensive.

Where do you see yourself in five years or where don’t you see yourself? Why?

I would like to have a nice little cottage with a small garden and a patio.  I will have friends that know my door is always open and they stop by often.  My kids are happy and on their own for the most part.  The person I love wakes up with me each morning.  I have learned to dance and can speak French, Italian, and Spanish.  I have caught the travel bug and have started marking things of my larger life list.  I still appreciate the little things in life.  My life remains simple- uncluttered.  I have made my own financial stability.

Where do I see this happening? I cannot say.  Maybe I will move to the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Italy or maybe I will move just an hour away.  My friend John has offered to let me sail away with him and explore the world from the deck of his boat.  The truth is it doesn’t matter where I am living if I am with someone I love, life will be wonderful

Where do you see yourself in five years or where don’t you see yourself? Why?

In five years' time I see myself attending more of the ADA celebration events to bring awareness of what people with disabilities need assistance with in order to be as successful in life as possible.  I think this would be good because having the disabilities I have allows me to use my own experiences to educate others.  In the ext five years, however I don't see myself ever going back to school.  There've been way too many problems I've dealt with in the last several months of trying to go back to UIS.  The biggest chalenge was getting reliable transportation, which made getting to class on time, even at all, more difficult that it would for someone without a disability.  I don't see myself ever trying UIS again due to the isues with transportation

I've given up on predicting the future.  :-)  Every time I make a plan, I end up somewhere completely different.  Plan to move to Asia, I end up in Alaska.  Plan to stay in Alaska, I end up moving back to the lower 48.  So no more planning.  Where I am in 5 years will be wherever God takes me.  And that's good enough for me.  As long as my husband is with me.  :-)

Alive. How weird is that? Never thought I would make it to 20 or 25, but 30 seems plausible now.

Mostly I expect to be in the same place. Same job, same husband, I hope. Same mental illness with periodic flareups and a lot of annoying maintenance requirements. I might be in my own house by then. I might have a dog. I might have that damned master's degree. A few changes, a few incremental improvements, but nothing dramatic.

Or maybe I will be the queen of the moon. Five years is an aggressive timeline, but I'm a resourceful lady.

Where do you see yourself in five years or where don’t you see yourself? Why?

Asking this question to a person of middle age is to invite a lecture on the uncertainty of life and the nature of disappointment.

Mind, I am not speaking of the futility of planning, all I am saying is that leave room for flexibility. Life throws curveballs, games get rained out, the field turns to mud, the stadium roof falls in, and you might have less than satisfactory people on your team. None of these can be foreseen, but with enough flex it is possible to still move the game forward.

In five years, I'd like to have my little coffee business up and going enough to be comfortable. I'd like to be out of Los Angeles - hopefully in a cleaner and way less expensive place.

That’s easy. Right where I am.. Five years from now? A little older yes but here by the ocean…I came home almost two years ago and I don’t plan on going anywhere. Why? There is something about walking on the beach any time you want or listening to the surf in the fall or winter. Its magnetic. There is an understanding and serenity by the ocean. I’m reminded by the power of the sea that I’m not in charge of anything that happens and I can feel my Higher Power listening when I think.

Where do you see yourself in five years or where don’t you see yourself? Why?

To start, let's go back five years and think about where I saw myself then. That would bring me to the summer of 2006, probably right around the time my dog died. It was a preeeeeetty shitty time in my life. I'd just lost my job at David's Bridal and started work at both the Disney Store and Bath and Body Works. Between the two, I worked less than twenty hours a week and could barely make ends meet. It would've been a good job, if I'd been sixteen that year. Sadly, as I was twenty-two and had a car and insurance payments to make, it wasn't a great situation.

When you're in those circumstances, it's hard to see a future, and admittedly, I didn't really. For a little while, I thought I was going to get my ME in secondary education, but then I remembered that I don't really like working with teenagers all that much and scrapped that plan. I was relatively aimless, just basically living paycheck to paycheck and hoping that, at some point, inspiration would strike.

And oddly, it was that summer when things started changing, mostly because I met this really amazing guy from Texas. But that's neither here nor there.

Five years from now. Hmm.

It's honestly a difficult thing to say, still, though not because I'm aimless. I really have two ideas of what I want to start doing in the next five years. The first involves going back to school, getting my PhD in creative writing, and then teaching at a relatively small liberal arts college, preferably in California or New England. The second involves taking what I'm learning at my job now and the experience I'm collecting and applying to become a technical writer at Blizzard, eventually moving laterally into the lore and creative writing department.

Either way, I don't plan to stay in technical writing forever.

I do know that I'll still be with Kyle in five years and I do know that within five years, we want to have kids. Once we got back from our honeymoon, we actually had that very brief but serious conversation. "So, when do you want to stop trying to not get pregnant?" "When I can replace your income." Problem solved. We expect that in the next two to three years.

I hope that I won't be in Texas any longer. I mean no offense to any Texans who may read this. You have a state that is very lovely in places and definitely interesting. I can see the appeal! But it's not for me. I'm not a fan of the heat, I'm not a fan of the flatness, I'm not a fan of being the most liberal person I know down here (and I'm only a moderate!). It's the same as if a Texan was transplanted to Colorado; the results would be rather lulzy. Ideally, within five years, we'll be living in New England, Maryland, or California (just based off of where my company has offices and where I have preferred schools).

I don't know if we'll be getting a house or not yet. I don't think we will. We're trying to be practical in that regard and waiting to buy a house until we're sure it's the house we'll be living in for the next twenty-plus years. Neither of us want to buy a house and then sell it and then buy a house and then sell it. We both really want to make sure that we can have stable lives, unpack the boxes for a long time, and call someplace home for a long time. I don't know that we'll be there in five years, but if we are, that's great.

In a dream world...hmm. In a dream world, Kyle will be making enough in the next five years that I can slow down and do a little more creative writing with my time. I've been rereading one of my favorite books (Stephen King's On Writing) and he talks about taking 4-5 hours of your day and just writing. GOD I would love to do that. I really would. Part of me wonders why I'm not doing it now, but then I get home from work and am so drained that I can't think creatively until it's almost bedtime. But in a dream world, I can work half days and spend the first half of the day writing.

Yeah, that's basically what I'm getting at. Writing. A lot. That's where I'll be in five years.

I don't see myself making money on the same lines as financial people for sure. I don't think anything will change. I will just grow old and become a hermit. I will never find the right job for me. Doesn't help when you haven't got a specific career in mind and people are so cynical on whatever your dreams are.

If things did go my way, I'd meet trustworthy friends who I get along with and we'd form a band then tour all over the world.

Where do you see yourself in five years or where don’t you see yourself? Why?

That is a really good question!

I hope that I will be able to at least visit my father, or see him online or something. But that is a hope. Still, five years would be forever without that.

I think probably though I will be with my mother's system the way I am now. I am getting used to being on the outside more, and also my father's system has made it clear they don't want us there in a way that means I would not feel comfortable trying to have a real life there. You can't build a life when you are worried that someone is going to rip it apart at any minute. Fights are one thing but starting off the big nothing/echthroi is something else. But then even one year ago I would not have thought things would be like they are now at all, so who knows.

Here in my mother's system...I hope we will be travelling more, these outside kids will be older and hopefully we will be doing some readings and things like that. But probably there will be a lot of boring times too, and that is all right. I want to be going to festivals because I have found already that I like them a lot...if you can't travel they are the next best thing.

I do not know what I would like to do. A lot of people here are writers and I do like writing here but I do not think I am really a writer at heart, not like they are. So maybe in five years I will have found something I am meant to do. I think people like writing because they bring things from the inside to the outside. But I would rather make the outside more like the inside.

I hope I will have either my rabbi or someone like him in my life. It is way too early to say how that will go but I did not know what was missing until I found it. I also hope to have some more friends.

Oh and I agree with aunt Shandra that we should be doing something harder physically that involves other people like racing or bicycle travelling or something. =) When we go out and run around I feel a bubble of happiness.

Where do you see yourself in five years or where don’t you see yourself? Why?

Five years would make me 47. I don't even know where I'll be. I've worked really hard to get where I am with my education and job and now I've finally made it. I think I need to take some time and figure this out. I'm the type of person that needs to have something to work for and for the life of me, I don't know what that is anymore. They might not be career or educational goals but if not that...what?  Let me know if you have any good ideas. The goals I have left aren't as fun for me, GRIN. Health, house cleaning and etc. This may mean that I need to get in touch with my own personal wants and that's a little hard for me to do...
