Writer's Block: It’s the thought that counts

What was the best gift you’ve ever received? Who was it from and what was the occasion?

The best gift I ever received was when all of my family gave their forgiveness for the mistakes I had done. It happens on my last holiday, when I decide to go home and tell my family about my problem.

That time I've made my family feel dissapointed.  But even in that situation, they never blame me. Instead, they told me to be carefull so I won't repeat the same mistakes. Rather than blamming me, they cheer me and give me the courage to make a new start; to learn from my past and move forward.

My family have give me something important to learn; If you lost the wills and interests to do something or to finish your doing, just remember that your loved ones are waiting and hoping for your success. And when someone make a mistake, rather than blamming, it's better to forgive and give your support. Because even without you blamming them, I'm sure they already regretting their mistakes.

that's a tough call.

possibly the time my friend Asbestos/Tim randomly gave me a Skinny Puppy ticked in 2007. I knew they were on tour, but hadn't been following it that closely and had no idea there was a MEET AND GREET at Fashionation in Denver before the show. if I hadn't checked MySpace (lol, this was back in the day) I wouldn't have even known I was going. I ditched work that day, drove down to Denver alone, met Ogre (swooned for a few hours afterwards) and saw a great show in a small venue (even though the >21 area was depressingly small and in the back... let's face it, most SP fans are at least in their 30s). that was an awesome gift.

a few days ago, I found out an acquaintance of mine that I used to work with has extra tickets to see A PERFECT CIRCLE at RED ROCKS. this is happening on Tuesday (which I - randomly - have off work... YAY!!!!) I've wanted to go to this show since I heard about it but I didn't have money when tickets went on sale. he's charging my boyfriend and I face value which is only about $50 apiece. sometimes (albeit rarely) luck is on my side. :D

anyway. this could've been deeper, sure, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

Writer's Block: Going the distance

Would you uproot your life and move to another city for someone that you love?

Most likely, he would. But only if he truly felt it was necessary for their relationship. If he thought the gesture would be pointless or that the other party wouldn't appreciate it, he wouldn't move even if they asked him to. He only shows his interest in commitment if he thinks the other person is worth committing to.

Would you rather be a vampire or a vampire hunter, and why?

Most obviously a vampire. Especially since he was recently given the choice to become one and accepted. But yes, if he'd been asked this question when he was human, he would have given the same answer. Vampire hunters might be closer to his former job description--especially since his former job dealt with a lot of subjects along those lines--but he wouldn't have chosen it. Vampire hunters typically lead shorter lives and die brutally. Vampires also tend to die brutally but Kanda would rather live a long life in search of  his goal than a short one chasing beings to eradicate them.

What was the best gift you’ve ever received? Who was it from and what was the occasion?

the best gift i ever received was my christmas present from brian. it was pokemon platinum, a pack of rainbow styluses (styli...?), and his spare DS charger. i do not play it as much as i should. but it still is my favorite thing i have ever received, because he got it for me and put thought into it.

my second favorite gift was the bouquet of flowers he sent me back in november... is that considered a gift? i don't know, but it was the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me.

he also buys me world of warcraft time cards, which is great and awesome! i tend to feel a little guilty when he spends money on me, but i am grateful he does this shit for me.

What was the best gift you’ve ever received? Who was it from and what was the occasion?

I'm debating between two items.

There was the TV I got for Christmas maybe ten years ago. I hated the TV I had previous to that one. It looked like it was still in the 70s or something - I didn't get a lot of channels and the thing would be so fucking stupid at times. To get that new TV, no matter how small it was, was pretty special.

And then there was October 20 in both 2007 and 2008. Mom and I ended up going to NHL games on those dates (07 in Boston, 08 in New York). The 2008 pregame was something when I walked into a bar and ordered my first legal beverage. I learned then that rum and Coke is not for me.

A lot of Radiohead songs..."Pyramid Song", "You and Whose Army", "Living in a Glass House", cause they're all so goddamn beautiful/have really emotionally intense memories attached to them.

...weirdly enough, those are all off of an album that I DESPISED the first time I listened to it.  Heh.

GODDAMN, I LOVE RADIOHEAD SO FUCKING MUCH.  I don't even wanna get started.

The best gift? I was given lots of gifts but I remember one, a particular one: after its receiving I was like on cloud nine for many many days. Weeks? Don't remember! but I crooned the melody while my Maths test (it's the first song on it).
Oke, so the gift was Adam Lambert's For Your Entertainment. I got it due to my 18th birthday from the mate I invited to my party.
And I was really like.

What was the best gift you’ve ever received? Who was it from and what was the occasion?

It is a challenge to think of anything material that has meant so much to me. One item I think of is a painting hanging on my wall. It is one my father painted of me when I was five years old. Also in the room is a bookshelf he made, which my older siblings carved their names into. He had built it before I was born. He also used to make various wood carvings. I could continue to venture on this subject, merely thinking of creations I received that were handmade by family and friends. Taking the time to make something, such as quilts, jewelry, paintings, dolls, etc. become the most prized items. I still cherish, and forever will, the afghan my beloved grandmother made for me 25 years ago.

But gifts are not always material, such as the gift of life...

My daughter is the best gift I ever received - almost 20 years ago. She has brought fulfillment and joy to my life, which words can never describe. :)

It was a Christmas present form my brother, a book by Alistair Reynolds called Chasm City. It was a book i actually wanted, and it was one of the few times that I hadn't gone to someone and actually pointed out the books I wanted them to get fro me, which really astounded me.

The only way to open it is if you actually get somone to cut thought the steel, so it definatly has helped me save money quite a few times <3

What was the best gift you’ve ever received? Who was it from and what was the occasion?

I have to say that the best gift I have ever receive is a new bed. It was from my mom and dad. I told my mom that I need a new bed because my old one was starting to hurt my back, so she bought me a new one right that day. The reason why it is so special is because we didn't really have any money and she decide to buy one for me instead. The other thing is that she and my dad needed a new bed too because theirs were getting old but since they loved me, they decided to buy me one instead.

Marina V's "THURSDAY SONG".  The first time I heard Thursday Song... it was like Marina had read the pages of my diary, like she was right there in the room with Tina and me. One promising to listen and not judge, to never turn her back and always be there… the other promising to make her proud… always stand by her… “you’ll be my hero”.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song... every time I hear it... I cry.

Do you think that criminals should be able to profit from selling their memoirs, after serving jail time?
Yeah. I think they should be able to. Of course, that's a pretty selfish answer seeing as I love reading that kind of thing. Besides, anybody should be allowed to write a book. They've done their time, so they deserve it. It is an honest living; writing takes effort and skill.

I really can't remember, since it has been months after my birthday. Staying with my family and bonding with them is much more better than wasting money for my birthday, in my opinion.

But the gift I liked very much was receiving roses from all of my classmates at school. I mean, who wouldn't like it? Even some of your enemies in the class gives you some as well. I don't know who got them into giving me roses but I still appreciated it.

Best gift ever, I guess ..

L-O-V-E is a VERB

What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten (and want to share with other LJ users)?

when i was a young girl, my family would go to the province for summer vacation. it is during these times that i get to bond with my relatives. i remember an uncle of mine telling me and my other female cousins this advice: do not believe every guy who tells you he loves you especially when he asks for something after saying those words. in this day and age when those three words are spoken as frequently as "hi" and "thank you" and often times spoken carelessly, one has to be discerning as to the sincerity of the person saying it. no matter how sweet sounding it is or how elated it makes you feel, one has to see and feel beyond the words. love must be more than a noun...people should take it as a verb.

What was the best gift you’ve ever received? Who was it from and what was the occasion?

Do the Walls Come Down by Carly Simon. It is a very haunting song, and the first time I heard it, I literally had goosebumps. That was many years ago (forgot what year, but in the mid-80s I think, and it remains one of my favorite songs.

A more recent song is Jar of Hearts written and sung by Christina Perry (or is it Perri?). The first time I heard it was 2 weeks after she had written it and she was performing it for the first time. It was on So You Think You Can Dance and two dancers performed alongside Christina at her piano. I was riveted, and got those goosebumps of you speak.

1."Cosmic Love" by Florence and the Machine. No matter how many times I hear it, I still love it just as much. Absolutely chillingly beautiful. Florence's voice always gives me the chills, and in this song in particular, because of the lyrics and the emotions she puts into them, especially in the live versions I've heard of this. I would do almost anything to see her live, no joke.

It's a tie between two songs.

"Three Wooden Crosses (On the Right Side of the Highway,)" by Randy Travis. I think it gives me goosebumps, because it makes you realize that there is some ultimate plan and every life touches another.

"Ten Thousand Angels," by Loretta Lynn (I'm not sure if she wrote it, but she's the first person I heard sing it). It makes me think about the sacrifice of Jesus.

Anyway, I listen to a lot of country gospel and a good many of them give me chills, but those are the first that came to mind.

Smooth Criminal as performed by Luka and Stejpan! They have a CD out now, which I heard yesterday. But from what I heard, the CD is pretty kitschy. I'll still probably end up buying it.

When I was in Romania, I took a train to Bucharest and shared a compartment with two attractive Eastern European cellists. I looked out the window (because Romania is gorgeous) and read my book the whole time since I didn't speak any Romanian. I didn't get a good look at them, but OMG what if they were Luka and Stejpan? My freshman year of High School is when this song came out,or just became rather popular. It was also the year that a classmate from my sandbox days,up to that point, commited suicide.
Now for some reason when i hear this song I have to turn it.I guess its the whole 'the sun will set for you'....Or 'your friends all plead for you to stay'...If not that maybe 'sometimes goodbye's the only way'...And for her maybe that's what she thought. That whatever was so terrible about her life would never get any better,so she commited the greatest sin.
This song gets to me so badly that when i was at a linkin park concert I actually teared up when they began to sing this one.And may i add his soothing, almost eerie voice is even better live.

Had to answer this one.

I'd have to say "Goodbye to You" by Michelle Branch. I don't really know if in a good way or a bad way. I guess both. Bad, because it reminds me of Sean and what he did to me. Good, because it is the song that gave me strength when I decided to cut him out of my life. So while it is terrible to think about the abuse, it's also good to reflect on the power I gained over the situation and how I have overcome a terrible situation. I am a survivor. And that song speaks to me as a survivor.

What was the best gift you’ve ever received? Who was it from and what was the occasion?

Which song gives you goosebumps? Good or bad-- tell us why.

There are a few that, no matter how many times I hear them, can move me to goosebumps (or tears). Zubin Mehta's version of Holst's "Mars - The Bringer of War" from the Planets' Suite, for one. I've heard several versions, but they all seem mannered by comparison to this one. The musicians of the LA Philharmonic seem straining at the bit, as though Mehta is barely able to keep them in check. Tremendous undercurrents of barely controlled energy.

Then there's John McLaughlin's first "Shakti" album, recorded live in 1975 or 1976. Side 2 of the LP consists of a single 29 minute jam, partway through which McLaughlin sets his guitar down and lets the percussionists duke it out. Vinayakaram's solos are rich and sensuous, but a tad too measured perhaps. It's Hussain's tabla that gets the audience worked up, and their explosive applause at the end of an incredibly fast run still gives me chills.

I've got a recording from 1961 of Dizzy Gillespie playing live at Monterey. Back then his pianist was a young Argentinian ethno-musicologist from the Paris Conservatory by the name of Lalo Schifrin. No one knew how influential this kid would become in the world of film music ("Mission: Impossible", e.g.), but his solo at the end of "Kush" ought to have given a clue. Not strictly a jazz solo, though heavily informed by jazz, it's clearly a composer's take on the genre. It builds slowly, but by the end, he's got the drummer & bassist locked into the groove. When they finally glide gently to a landing, I can rarely resist the impulse to back it up and play it again. It's an amazing piece of spontaneous music.

Everyone seems to be freakin out today.
Today started out pretty good :) I weighed myself and was 134.8 so I decided to eat very healthy all day. I suprisingly didn't see E today but i did talk to her on the phone. A friend of her's and I know him too hung out with him couple times, his mom died yesterday ( same day as Amy Winehouse). Anyway it was really sad and made me in a funk all day, then I called my cousin cause I needed advice for what I should put on his facebook wall. Then we were talking and she was complaining and telling me how terrible her life is. I feel bad for her but it brought me down even more. Then B called asking with a huge favor to babysit for this kid i've  never met. B was panicing then was also complaining to me about her life. Now my mom tells me I have math tutoring tomorow at noon and I HATE math. Soo right now i'm in a bad funk not mad just.. I dont know weird?
Hopefully things will be lookin up, but at least I lost some weight! :)

On the bright side yesterday was fun! After a meet n greet with my tutor me and my mom accidentley got on the wrong train home so we took a detour to coney island! Went on 2 rides! One of them u lay on ur stomach and it goes upside down

If you could go back and change one event in your life (or un-say one thing you wish you'd never said), what would you choose, and why?

It would be the 1 year relationship i had with my boyfriend Jaleen Antonio Walker! June 18th of this year i found out somethings that to this day are hard to even imagine possible! He cheated on me with a 15 year old girl the day before i came to see him and the next day when i did come to see him he said i have plans so im sorry we can't hangout like really whatever dude so that weekend rolls around i decide to confront him about it but before i do i hide in the bushes by "his girlfriends house" and i hear everything i need to every piece of dirt that tells me i don't need him in my life anymore so that night i tell him what i heard and i want to slap him across the face but instead he picks me up and throws me across the room. to hear that ur boyfriend doesn't love u anymore is so hard to hear it's like what did i do to deserve this! but i got advice for everyone out there if ur friends tell you not to date a guy that u want to bc they feel that he's suspicious or theres something about him they don't like listen to them bc more then likely they are right don't date him bc more then likely u'll lose most of ur friends and family bc of him and it's not worth it bc u'll have to put everything back together urself and it's not fun it's only been a month since my issue but i feel like i can't trust no one and that everyones going to be like him where in turn ik i shouldn't think that bc with time things will get better i just need to wait for the time being!

There are probably others that significantly do but this one easily the most. "The Miracle of Love" by The Swans. The entire composition totally hit me hard right away with what is played and sang. It's so easy to relate to the lyrics. The music takes it's time and builds tonally and it's speed based on what is needed for the thoughts and feelings of the song the way music should.

Writer's Block: Going the distance

Would you uproot your life and move to another city for someone that you love?

if we were in a long relationship at the time like a year relationship then yes but otherwise probably not bc what if something happens to the relationship you'll just end up moving back so i think my answer would be a definite MAYBE!

Many of them. Just now, Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" did it for me. The Largo from Dvorak's 9th does it every time. Music reaches deep into me, and I hear every part. Sometimes, the words add to it, and sometimes they are superfluous. If I listed every bit of music that moved me and why, this would be an endless post.

I like Metallica for the strong, forceful guitar, that these guys sing on key, and that the words generally line up with something I believe. (Really. I'd have to sit and explain that. headbanger118  knows what I mean.) I love Classical music of the Classical and Romantic eras and have no problem switching between Chopin and Children of Bodom. Someday, Simon and Garkunkel's "A Bridge Over Troubled Water" will be a masterpiece Classical Music. (Why not? Mozart was a 'rock star'.)

Very little music is 'beneath' me. I find System of a Down quite interesting. I hate the bumper sticker I saw that said that the only real music was country. There are some great country songs and some great artists, but if the whole genre disappeared, music would exist and continue to thrive. I tell people that disco tried to kill rock, but will sing along with the BeeGees. I cry that rap isn't music, but was caught mumbling along with Emimim.

Now my playlist is into Black Sabbath, and it is time to move on...

Do you think that criminals should be able to profit from selling their memoirs, after serving jail time?

Which movie or book character are you most like, and why?

I think I'm most like Hermione Granger - I have dark brown hair that's naturally bushy, and I love to read and I love school.  I'm also one of the smartest kids in my class, and I got fairly good SAT scores - my math and reading scores combined were 1230 out of 1600, and my total score math, reading, and writing) was a 1950.  I can easily get into my two favorite colleges, with scholarships, with those scores, especially when combined with my grades, which have been almost all A's (with only two B's per year) for the past three years.  I even got awards for my English and science grades in middle school.

Nick Lowe's "Cruel To Be Kind".

I don't know how in the world this got past the recording studio, but the background singers are flat to everything else. The lead singer may be also.

I mean, they are perfectly in tune with each other, but flat to everything else.

Drives me crazy every time I hear it.
