Writer's Block: Parlez-vous francais?

What other foreign languages do you know? Which one(s) do you want to learn?

English is my native/first language.  I started learning French when I was thirteen, and it's my current major at university, and I'm like... semi-fluent?  I also speak some Italian (and it's my second major, but I'll probably drop it to a minor/certificate), but I'm much better at reading/writing in other languages than I am at listening to them being spoken.

I want to become as fluent as possible in French and Italian, and being a huge linguophile there are so many languages I'd love to learn.

This includes but is not limited to:
- German
- Japanese
- Spanish
- Hebrew
- Portuguese
- Russian

Sadly, I'm not fluent in any other language than my own simply because I've never had the opportunity to speak with anyone on a regular basis.

I can, however, get by in French and German.  I have a little knowledge of Italian and a few words and phrases in Spanish.

Over the last few years I've learnt some Mandarin Chinese, Farsi and recently have been learning a little Russian but I find it extremely difficult to pronounce.

I've met a very nice woman who lives near me who is Polish so have been learning a few words of that, but again, I find it difficult to pronounce.

I would love to be fluent in at least one other language and I think French is the most likely but Italian would be my second choice as I love both languages.

My native tongue is Indonesian. I'm fluent in English and Italian. (And I prefer talking/writing/reading in English.)

Then: Japanese, French, Spanish.

I've studied Arabic once. I did quite all right there back then but I've now lost the knowledge.

I want to learn Portuguese and Sindarin/Quenya.

Writer's Block: Happy birthday Mr. President!

What is one thing that needs to be changed in your country?

The employment situation in America really needs to change. There are too many people out there who don't have jobs but really need them. And when people do have a job, they still aren't able to take care of their family's as well as they need to be cared for. People need to get jobs and be able to make enough money to support themselves and their families and they need to keep their jobs for longer than like a few weeks. The president and his office people need to start getting paid less and start giving that money to help pay our debt and jobless people. People in the army make over $100,000 less than the president and all the president does is sit there and do nothing, basically. Especially compared to the military people who are fighting for us. It's just ridiculous.

What other foreign languages do you know? Which one(s) do you want to learn?

Je parle un peu de francais, mais pas bien.

And I speak English, quite well if I may say so myself.

The non-foreign language I speak is, of course, Swedish.

I can order beer and ask for the bathroom in Spanish, and a few other random words and sentences.

I understand Norwegian and Danish decently well written, and spoken Norwegian. Danish is harder, but I can get by on a tourist level.

I know a few words of Finnish - and by few I mean three or four. I know the odd word of a bunch of other languages too - "fried chicken" in Greek, "good morning" in Japanese, "cheers" in Russian, that sort of thing - and can puzzle out a fair bit of written German and Dutch.

I would like to know all of them - as in every language on earth. Realisticially, I'd like to learn French properly. If I was ambitious I'd go for French, German and Spanish. If I was really ambitious I'd add Mandarin and Swahili, and arabic. If I was really _really_ ambitious I'd finish up by also adding Welsh.

What other foreign languages do you know? Which one(s) do you want to learn?

I don't really know any foreign languages, tbh. We had to take two classes of the same foreign language, both in high school and college. I took two Spanish classes in high school and one French class. Then another two Spanish classes in college. I remember almost nothing of French. I can do a little with Spanish, but mostly only in reading. My writing and listening/talking skills suck.

I was never that interested in either Spanish or French. I only took French because it was either that or the Body Imaging class (PE class, mostly only girls took it) they put me in in high school because the original class I was going to take had been taken off the schedule. I hated PE (in high school anyway; college PE was actually fun), so French it was. Spanish I had to take to graduate in high school/college. So because I HAD to take it, I wasn't that interested in keeping my knowledge of it. I only studied for the grades, then forgot most of it.

I think it would be fun to learn another language. Just one I want to learn, not one I'm forced to learn. I'm not sure what I'd like to learn though. Maybe I could continue with Spanish since I know the most about it. I dunno. *shrug* I've always thought learning German or Chinese might be fun. I was going to take the introduction classes in college for electives, but either it didn't fit my schedule or I've heard that the teacher was crazy.

Yay rambling. Fun.

so...besides English..I also learn arabic..but that was years ago..and Ive kinda forgotten about the grammar and vocab..in my uni, I learned Mandarin, since I am from Malaysia, and Chinese is one of the biggest race in my country. I need to have something that can understand them, and connect with them.

Now...I am fully interested in Japanese! it all started when I watched one of the funniest japanese drama called Hanazakari no Kimitachi e..and after that i got addicted to the no1 Jpop group called Arashi. so, I learn bit by bit... I wanna know what are they laugh at, talk about, cry about....
At first it was so hard...my tips...must have subtitles at first...and after that try to memorize some important vocabs..some frequent words that they used...and then when it is no sub, i can understand what are they talk about..not exactly..and not all i can define..but it's okay for me as an amateur...

i wish i can go to Japan and experience the beauty of their country.
the language, the culture and the people there are just wonderful.

I know a fair bit of Spanish...the Mexicans at work have been teaching me more, which is pretty cool. I know a little bit of Chinese. Oh, and the alphabet and a few words in American Sign Language. lol. I want to be fluent in the ones I do know and learn...idk maybe French, one or two more. Languages and that kind of stuff fascinates me.

I'm actually watching Craig Ferguson right now. He's in Paris this week. Eddie Izzard is talking French and I have no idea what he's saying but I love it. Can I also just love the fact that Kristen Bell is hanging out on the show like all week?

Spanish (castellano) has given me a tenuous handle on Portuguese and a few phrases in Catalan (which actually helped me pick up some untranslated remarks in a French opera). Some Mandarin, mostly Cantonese. Going on to study Arabic (three years of background in Hebrew) and promised a friend I'd self-study German.

I'd love to get into Czech or Malay.

Not a chance. I'd spend all of my time fretting about it. I just turned 49, and it's sobering enough to know that my remaining lifespan amounts to two or three more decades. Unless I take after my father, who died at 56.

I know some Spanish, since my mom's family speaks it, but that's it, really. I'd like to learn French properly, too, but I doubt that comes as any surprise.

Speaking of, I've been quiet lately, I know. I don't care. There hasn't been much to say, I guess. Things have been... weird. It's only been about a week since Maël left, and already it's too noticeable. I can’t really say that I’m lonely, though; I've been in Illinois since last Sunday – needed a change of scenery – and there’s never any shortage of people here. I’m itching to get home, though – the house is big and all, but there’s no decent spot for dancing, the ceilings are all too low for that. I’ll head back in a few days, probably; it’s almost my grandmother’s birthday and it’d be a pretty dick move to not stay for it.

What other foreign languages do you know? Which one(s) do you want to learn?
No, I can't speak French? I know a tiny tiny tiny bit of Prench and nothing else.

As for other languages, I began a formal study of Italian some years ago, intending to take up a course on European Languages. I didn't go through with it, so I sort of buried the language in my system until I realized I can actually continue studying the language and make use of the Italian credits that I already have. This is the language I'm formally learning right now, not as a EuroLang major, but as a LibSci major who's required to take 12 units of foreign language.

Because of fangirldom though, I've been learning Nihonggo little by little, by means of watching j-drama with subtitles. Well, I actually started with anime, so it goes way back in high school. I pick up phrases here and there as I watch, not to mention sing lots of J-pop songs and read the translations of those songs as well. Before I knew it, I had forgotten my Italian, and every time I recite in class, I'm constantly resisting the urge to reply in Nihonggo.

I'm pretty much happy if I can learn both Italiano and Nihonggo fluently, but because I'm Filipino, I would definitely prefer being more fluent in my native language than I am right now. Believe it or not, I still suck at Filipino (grammar and everything else), even if I use it every day. Probably because my English is interfering, pretty much like what Nihonggo is doing to my Italiano.

Oh, so I know four languages? Ooh-la.

Oui un petit peu. Mais, je ne veux pas parler francais.
Because french people are too stuck up to let you speak anything but french when you are in their country.
And at the same time expect you to speak french when they visit your country. Its really frustrating.

French is the language I know the least.
I know German and Japanese in about equal measures aka I can understand you just fine just don't talk at the speed of light.
I know English as if it were my native language however Dutch IS my native language.

I would love to learn Chinese and or Korean sometime but for now furthering my Japanese would already be very satisfying.

I plan on continuing it, but I would also love to learn German, Italian, and Russian. Though, as it turns out I have no ear or memory for Russian... Which is a pitty because I would really like to learn it... Aside from those three, I have a interest in the Scandinavian languages and Hungarian. That last one though is a long-shot >_>... If you had the option to learn the exact moment and details of your death, would you choose to know?

Probably, since odds are it'll be something I can prevent, or at least get early treatment for and live longer and healthier.

Consider that most deaths before 80 are cancer, heart disease, car accidents, or strokes, all of which can be prevented or treated early.  If it were possible to get a message that says "you will die on 8/5/2036 of liver cancer," you'd get that checked out several times a year until you caught it in its first stages, wouldn't you?

Or if you knew that you'd die next Thursday in a tragic car accident, you'd probably take a different route home.  About 30 million people die globally in car accidents anyway, so much that it's considered a major factor in longevity in developed nations.

This is assuming, of course, that the future isn't some kind of "Final Destination" deal that will compensate for your every effort to stay alive by screwing you over in a grand dramatic way.  In that case, it would just suck knowing you were only delaying an inevitable early death.

What other foreign languages do you know? Which one(s) do you want to learn?

Well, Norwegian is my native language and I can read and understand spoken Swedish and Danish more or less fluently. English is my only foreign language, and I am much better in writing than in spoken, simply because I very rarely are in places where English is spoken.

I would love to learn a Sami language, Icelandic and Spanish. Perhaps when I have finished college I can take some language class just for my own enjoyment; that would be both fun and interesting. Oh, I forgot Finish! I would love to learn more than the one swear word I know. Come to think of it I really should know the basics like ‘I love you’, ‘hello, my name is’ as so on. Perhaps youtube can help me with such simple things?

While I’m talking about classes, I would absolutely love to attend some photography classes as well, and more writing workshops would be neat. I have not written anything in ages and really I have a story I have worked a lot with during both a full school year and two workshops, all studying creative writing and I really want to get back into it. I love writing, and I love the characters and happenings in the story, but I just got one hell of a writer’s block I guess. Maybe I should challenge myself to write a certain amount of words each week not related to school or LJ/thumblr/the net at large.

What other foreign languages do you know? Which one(s) do you want to learn?

I know just a drop of Japanese, enough to introduce myself and give basic information. I doubt I could even ask for directions or comment on the weather. So, I'd like to improve that a bit, at least to be able to understand enough to go visit and maybe stay for a summer/year/more.

I'm strongly considering minoring in Spanish in college, which wouldn't be very difficult. That's what my dad suggested, and would be pretty useful, especially in Texas. I'm not sure about any others, but maybe Russian? German? Chinese would be useful too, and uses the same characters as Japanese. They have different meanings, and are read differently, and I'm not sure if learning one makes the other easier.

Anyways, goal: Native English, Fluent Spanish, Fluent Japanese. I'm a third of the way there! (a little more, but my Japanese is better than my Spanish lol)

No way. I'd be scared the rest of my life up until that moment. And I definitely wouldn't want to know if I'm going to die early. I plan on living a nice long life and if I die at like 25 or something, I'd just rather not know. AND I also wouldn't want to know how I die because if it's painful or something, I'll also be scared of that up until it actually happens. If I die a horrible painful death, I'll know when I'm experiencing it and I don't need to think about it beforehand.

Just NO, I don't know why anyone would want to know when or how they're going to die.

By "know" does that mean I know a few words and phrases?
Do I have to be able to speak it fluently?
Enough so that I can ask for a price and buy something from a shop?

I know a little French and a little German only because I studied it in school... and just because I did, it is no reason to introduce me to a native speaker by saying "oh she studied ****** in school!"

"Studied in school" is just another way of saying "purged most of the knowledge after the exams were over"

My Indonesian is at a grade school level. I know enough vocabulary and phrases to get me by.
I didn't think I had improved much until last night when I had to hold an exam and there was a miscommunication with admin staff and I was the last teacher there. Suddenly. For one short moment I became effectively bilingual. Pulling out expressions like nobody's business and repeating vocabulary I learnt 5 minutes ago. So great.
I think it was the adrenaline to the brain that opened up my language bank.

Which do I want to learn?
Here let me just show you my French, German, Spanish and Dutch dictionaries, my Japanese phrasebook and character chart and the pile of Pimsleur mp3s I have stored somewhere.

One day... I will get my ass up and learn something.
Otherwise I am doomed to be unilingual D:
