Writer's Block: Get in my belly

What is your mother’s specialty dish? In other words, what food makes you salivate at the thought of it?

For the most part, I am a much better cook than my mom.  She never drains the grease off the hamburger when she is making a hot dish, and every meat that she makes is extremely overdone.

However, she is the world's greatest dressing maker.

Everyone in our family begs for turkey for every holiday--not because we like turkey but because we love the dressing she makes!

Man, I'd love a big bowl of that dressing right now!

.

What is your mother’s specialty dish? In other words, what food makes you salivate at the thought of it?

shkolazhizni.ru/archive/0/n-21552/

My mum is an excellent cook, better now than when I was younger ... or maybe my tastes have just changed. But she has three standout meals that I will eat any time, under any circumstances.

(1) Pot roast, complete with potatoes, carrots, onions.
-- There is literally no meal better than this, I swear. The pot roast is always fork-shredding tender, the potatoes tender, but not mushy, and the carrots are sweet, almost. The gravy is really just the juices it was all cooked in, and you ladle it over the potatoes, and then just ... oh God.
SO. GOOD.

(2) Baked chicken with stuffing and swiss cheese.
-- Chicken breasts are pounded thin, and then spread with a layer of cranberry-orange relish. A thick layer of stuffing is then pressed over it, then topped with slices of swiss cheese, and baked. The taste combination is just brilliant.

(3) Lewis burgers.
-- I'm not sure where this came from, and neither is Mom, but she thinks it was from a restaurant that she and my father used to go to when they were dating. But its a thick, homemade cheeseburger, topped with a layer of egg salad, then a slice or two of thin deli ham, and mustard.

I know, it sounds bizarre, but its so delicious - and hey, if Red Robin can slap a fried egg on a burger and call it 'signature', egg salad can't be far off.

And I know, this isn't about dessert, but she makes this three-tier yellow cake, with cream cheese, brown sugar and crushed nuts in between each layer. It's topped with cream cheese frosting and slices of mandarin orange.

Great - now I'm starving.

My mother makes some nice things strictly following a recipe, but my father could COOK. He's too ill now to do so. I inherited the non-measuring type of cooking, and my own favorite meal that I make, is Thanksgiving dinner.

What is the one song you must sing at karaoke?

It depends on the night and the crowd. On a busy night I like to do something like Pink's 'Raise Your Glass' or Katy Perry's 'Last Friday Night'. It doesn't matter if you're any good at them, generally the whole bar with be singing along by the chorus! Or maybe something comedic, like JoCo. I do alot of Who, and one of my best songs is Eric Carmen's 'Make Me Lose Control'.

What is the one song you must sing at karaoke?

"Before he Cheats" I like it because its angry and the words are easy to follow.

I hate how much stuff I accumulate in my life. I know that I am a hoarder and I really don't want to end up like my father, who treasures things over the happiness of his family. He has driven my sister completely away and even I find it difficult to deal with him at times.  Growing up I would have easily said I had two loving parents who raised me, now as an adult I realize my mother raised us and my father paid the bills. That coupled with the fact that he would rather watch TV or play with his things outside has created a very distant relationship with my father. Even now I feel embarrassed by him and find it hard to bring people home to meet him. Which is silly because he can talk with people just fine, its his own children that seem to be the struggle. I remember growing up and hearing my mother say that she wished there had been a boy because my father would have related to a son better. This translated into my own mind that I was supposed to be they boy. After all I am named after my father and my sister came first so she could be either. I know my father loves me and has done many wonderful things to help me and show his love in his way. It really sucks though when I don't feel like sharing with him and even when I try I don't feel a sense that he cares enough to listen. I wish things had been different.

My mom doesn't like to cook or bake a whole lot but she makes the best banana bread and pumpkin pie and I always look forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas just for those things. She makes decent chili and she use to make really good fry bread but for some reason the last few times she's made it, it turned out dry...

My grandma makes awesome potato salad and that is, hands-down, my favorite food of all time <3 I just wish she'd share the recipe...

I really am not superstitious at all, I usually mock people who are.

The only thing that I do which is contrary to my actual beliefs are I knock on wood (well actually I knock on my head, regardless if there is wood around) I don't believe it at all, but like an OCD thing, i cannot stop myself. I know I learned it from my father who did it often in our everyday life. I know he isn't superstitious at all, so I find it funny to see him do it. funnier to see myself doing it.

What is the one song you must sing at karaoke?

You turn on the radio. How often do you know the very first song? How often can you change the station and know every song? Pretty freakin' often for me :) No, not all the time, but definitely a majority of it!!! I love to sing, wherever I am or whatever I'm doing. I listen to music while I'm cleaning, showering, sleeping, and every chance in between I get. Which leads me to my dilemma with this question:What is the one song you must sing at karaoke?

I KNOW TOO MANY AMAZING SONGS TO PICK ONLY ONE. But I shall endeavor to do so. Let's start with the top 5 songs to choose from, as a solo.

1. Baby Got Back,(Sir Mix-A-Lot)
**Old school rap- you gotta love it. Plus, getting up there in front of a crowd (where most are probably drunk anyway) and shooting off every dirty, guilty word- it builds the adrenaline in your body, and the pressure to continually lay down the lyrics like a baby on meds.

2. How Do You Like Me Know?! (Toby Keith)
**Yes, I know, it's country. But it's EPIC country. First of all, the song is about a guy who really liked this girl for a long time kept getting shot down because she was popular, and he was a band geek (or some other kind of geek). Then, coming back after he's all rich and famous and being all like "NOW WHAT." Second, you get to rock out and just have fun.

3. Pour Some Sugar On Me (Def Leppard)
**Classic rock. Def Leppard. A microphone. 'Nuf said.

4. I Will Always Love You (Whitney Houston)
**Yes, yes, this song is originally done by Dolly Parton. However, personally, I don't like her version. I like Whitney's more, because of the overall feeling, the rhythm, and the just plain black-ness of it. Anyway, a song that tons of people know and can sing quietly to themselves along with you, while you get to belt out a song with all the pain, love, and soulfulness you got.

5. Never Gonna Give You Up (Rick Astley)
**Um, helloooooo???? You can either do it in your own voice, or you can try and sing it Rick Astley style. Either way, it's sure to be hilarious, and both you and your audience are sure to have a uh... "Rick Rolling" time. (Laughs, anyone??)

Well I would have to say, depending on the person you are, and the music you like, all five of the above songs are acceptable choices- no, are MUST SINGS. one, two or even three can be done in one night. Personally, I would do all 5 in a row. No one could stand up to that. And that is the end.

What is the one song you must sing at karaoke?

Karaoke terrifies me, but I do love to sing. Of course, what I like to listen to is not at all what my voice is suited to so... old jazzy tunes, Summertime and Wade in the Water - that's what my voice does best. Something by Heart or Aretha Franklin could be a hell of a lot of fun on a karaoke stage... "You told me to leave you alone... my momma said come on home..." yeah - that would be fun. Or Elton John - or... any number of a million people, I can get bogged down in the subject of music for hours, but... I honestly can't see myself doing it. Having the balls to get up on stage and sing karaoke... or even having the balls to sing outside my shower [which is untrue, because I am that annoying person who sings in the grocery store].

Navin would say Piano Man, which is his song. And now he's going to tell me whether I'm right or wrong.

LOL! I actually have such a song that I *need* to sing- 'I'm the Only One' by Melissa Etheridge. Always loved that song!

Writer's Block: What would ____ do?

If you have the opportunity to be someone else for one week then who would you be? Tell us why and what you would do.

Uhhhm... Do fictional people count? XD I would want to be Dean Winchester! :D  First off because he's crazy hot, and it would be awesome to just stand in the bathroom for hours on end and stare at myself (Himself?) until my (His?) eyes bleed. X3 Then of course I'd like to try out "Hunting evil sons of bitches and raising a little Hell". Annoying Sammy and blasting classic rock in the Impala would be pretty damn fun too. ;3 And then there's always partaking in the whole "realizing my dirty fangirl fantasies" and having gay incestuous sex with Sam, and then obviously hittin' up Castiel and having hot epic Angel sex and then tooooootally having a threesome. ;D (Perhaps even convince Gabriel to join in on all the fun N' games, eh?)

So yeah, if I could be anyone for one week, I'd be Dean Winchester...

My mother would say her specialty dish is her "World's Best Lasagna," and it is good. However, if I had to eat one dish and one dish alone for the rest of my life, it would be her chili. I don't get to eat it any more because I'm vegetarian (so I guess I would have to pick the meat out every meal if that really was the only thing I could eat). If she would make it for me with either meat substitute or just no meat at all, I would be in heaven. I would also weigh 900 pounds if I could eat as much of it as I wanted.

I have never done karaoke. But the one song I have sung in alcohol infused tenor in bars, always, is "Paradise By The Dashboard Light". My coming-of-age song. I was 16 when that album came out. :)

Well, it was long ago, and it was far away, and it was so much better than it is today...

I try not to be, but I am thanks to work. It always seems like whenever someone says something like "wow, it's been slow today" or "yay! No euthanasias all day!" or "we've never seen an animal abuse/neglect case as bad as X," things start going to heck in a handbasket real fast D:

Tori is THE worst jinx. If she says "Today feels like it's gonna be a good day" or "this case is going to be OK" it's almost guaranteed not to be. And since she's got no filter, she always ends up saying things like that. Then she knocks on wood.

If I slip up, I half-jokingly say "knock on wood" while rapping my own head. Sometimes I'll do the same for my co-workers :P I also cross my fingers a lot.

What is the one song you must sing at karaoke?

Back when I sang karaoke on a regular basis, I would very frequently warm up with "Abacab" by Genesis. Other favorites were "New York State of Mind" by Billy Joel and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me" by Elton John.

I've rarely go out for karaoke now though, because especially since I quit drinking I don't like being in bars, and I much prefer singing and playing with live musicians.

Writer's Block: Do you feel lucky?

Are you superstitious? Do you have any customs or special rituals that you perform for good luck?

I am highly superstitious and I believe in ghosts and the paranormal/unexplanable.
I put salt at the entry of all my doorways, this keeps from negetive energy/bad spirits from entering my home or following me.
I have crystals in all my window seals, same theory as listed above. I have bells on all of my door-handles and wear them
around my ankle...Ghosts don't like the sound of wind-chimes/bells...I have found it to be very affective.
Also, I smudge my place constantly. The cherokee believe that negetive energy/spirits do not like the smell of sage/smoke.
Alot of cultures believe that smoke cleanses the soul and your space. So I do that often.
I also take alot of cleansing tea/herbal baths when I feel particularly negetive, to help me wash away all the ick.
LMAO...talk about being superstitious!

I also believe in Karma...HELLA.
There is more to this...but that's all I feel like listing.

What is the one song you must sing at karaoke?

Easy, "Unbreak My Heart" -Toni Braxton hands down.

Close seconds are probably silly things like "Barbie Girl", "Gay Bar", and then on the not so American end of the spectrum "Just Communication" by Two-Mix is absolute must.

And if nekopurinchan would kindly join me in "Final Distance"?

Did I get 'em all guys? ^___^

Man.... now I really, *really* wanna カラオケ (karaoke). ;A;

Writer's Block: Sing for friends, yourself and audience

What is the one song you must sing at karaoke?

For one group of friends, it was "get a couple of beers in me and I'll sing some Hank Williams (Senior) for you". I think I did a good job. Turned out the host was a Hank Williams fan, so our group had an in with him.
Since the songbooks have "Monster Mash" in them, it must be for me to sing it.
It was really nice to be singing as Kermit The Frog "It Ain't Easy Being Green" and hear the crowd quiet down and start to listen as the song went on.

What is the one song you must sing at karaoke?

Not that I should let this cat out of the bag...

One of the very few songs you might just possibly get me up to sing is: "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" by Nancy Sinatra. I was just a little thing in 1966 this song became a hit.  I loved sneaking on a pair of my mom's shoes and singing this at the top of my little lungs while clomping down the hall.

Bless the neighbors below us in the old farm house we lived in at the time. They never complained about my antics that I know of!

The other song you might be able to convince to stand up and sing would be "Witchy Woman"  by the Eagles. Released in 1972 just before my birthday in August of that year. That song 'followed' me through my teens and still leaves me a bit 'spellbound' with youthful memories when I hear it.
