Writer's Block: Jumped the shark

Which television show continues to get worse every season and should just get cancelled already?
1) Desperate Housewives. I don't even care anymore, I won't watch the new season.
2) House is just boring now.
3) Grey's Anatomy as well.
4) Disgusted by Jersey Shore, I still can't believe that shit is popular.

Bahaha. I'm gonna have to go with Degrassi TNG. Too many characters, not enough of them interesting. And I can't stand the way they introduce a story line in one episode and wrap it up unrealistically in the next episode, instead of rolling story lines through three or four episodes like they used to. Now it's all two-parters that have nothing special about them, when back in the day, two-parters were for Very Special things like surprise pregnancies and rape. And I guess a school shooting. Now they're for any mundane thing.

And yet, I still watch it. Sometimes I just can't facepalm hard enough.

For the most part with the shows I watch it's not that they get worse, but they do get taken in very stupid directions. Like on How I Met Your Mother. Barney falling in love with what's her name and now Robin wants him back? What. The. Fuck? And as for Two and a Half Men... It will become terrible by going through with the new season. They were better off just cancelling the show than pulling this pathetic thing with replacing Charlie Sheen. And replacing him with Ashton Kutcher? Chuck Lorre is just asking for it.

Three and a half men. That show wasn't good when it first started. Desperately hedonistic rich brother helps desperately hopeless broke/divorced brother raise a kid. Sure it was fun the first couple episodes, but it was basically the same plot over and over just tweaked the story a bit. Now, they're trying to revive it by bringing in Ashton Kutcher (who I couldn't care less about). Methinks this will probably be the show's swan song season. One can only hope.

I forget all good childrenbooks. At the time I don't know.. If a boy is older than 10 years old, I would recommend a books written by Boris Akunin about adventures of Erast Fandorin. Also it's good to read some business and motivation books, but it's not for little children but for teenagers.

Hi Diary,

today was pretty easy. We don't have any assignments from teachers for weekend, so I will do my things and just have a little rest. I got the game Portal 2 and it's really great game. The idea is just super and its realization is also.
After classes today I was sleepy and had nap from about 1 to 5 PM. So, I restored my night sleep at day. Because of so long day nap, I didn't go to jog, but I'm going to do it tomorrow.
Next time I'm going to write here some information about intreresting for me fields except an answer for daily question and my letter to you Diary =) But we'll see.
Don't want to expand broad my speech today. So, I guess that that's it.
Good night and sweet dreams.

And I'm going to study maybe 1 hour more =)

Well, it's a given that they'll read the Harry Potter series and the LotR series and The Hobbit.

I also will read them "Love You Forever" when they're little. My mom used to read that to me all the time and to this day it is one of my favorites. <3

I also hope my future children love Jean Craighead George books as much as I did, and Roald Dahl of COURSE. And hopefully "A Secret Garden."

Maybe Louis Sachar. The Wayside School books are cute, and I loved Holes. But those aren't absolute necessities.

So many favorite books from childhood. <3 I really hope my future children grow up to love literature as much as I did/do.

Sorry bros, I know you hate when I do these... But I have to. This one is too easy: Family Guy. I have never seen a show do a 180 so quickly and fall apart so effortlessly. There was a time when I used to love to turn on the TV on Sunday nights and watch Family Guy. Those days are long gone. A cheap man's Simpsons now.

Grey's anatomy. Not that I am a follower of the show. But I've seen some of the old one and some of the new ones.

Also, Gossip Girl, I feel like their aim is to take down each character downhill. I remember when I used to love Chuck! I think they're about to ruin Blair fucking Waldorf  for us now. Seriously, stop.

I don't watch much current television for a reason.

I watch Private Practice, but if it was cancelled tomorrow, I wouldn't miss it, except that I wouldn't be able to see the sexy Tim Daly every week. The show is too soap opera for my liking.

I saw a few episodes of Stargate Universe, which was way too not-Stargate-esque for my liking (huge SG-1 fan, beginning to get into Atlantis), and just felt like this show didn't need to be on the air. Thankfully, it was cancelled fairly swiftly, but it more than likely will have the distinction of being the series that brought down a strong franchise. I will admit that the times I did watch it, it was only because Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O'Neill) and Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) were in the episodes, and they were underused. I know, it wasn't their show, but still!

Jersey Shore should be cancelled, as it is an atrocity to those of us from Jersey.

Impulse comics.

Walt Disney Comics and Stories ... all the Duck stories of Carl Barks, Don Rosa, the Italian adventures of Mickey Mouse and the gang.

Peter Pan for sure, a beautiful book.

The Wizard of Oz series, because those books are lovely modern fantasy, and they portray strong female characters.

The Harry Potter books, because they're seriously wicked cool, and really good to read.

Charlote's Web and The Cricket in Times Square because those books are from my childhood and they hold a very dear place in my heart.

The Hobbit, because its cute.

Harry Potter. All of em. Because they're amazing. The Chronicles of Narnia, because they're the best. And all the classic Faerytales, by the Grimm Brothers, Hans Christan Andersen, and all the other. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, and Peter and Wendy. The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and Curdie. The Warriors series by Erin Hunter, probably. Bambi, Once Upon a Forest, Robin Hood, The Legend of King Arthur and His Knights, and most likely anything by Gail Carson Levine. Tuck Everlasting. Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Poetry by W.B Yeats. The Princess Bride (with a little editing haha). Probably Stardust...again, with a little editing. Treasure Island. The Last Unicorn. The NeverEnding Story. And I'd introduce them to any and all works of Brian Froud and Lady Cottington.

There's probably quite a few more, but I just woke up, so none spring to mind. Foggy brain at this hours and all that.

and have a relationship with Him. I Love You Forever by Robert Munsch is one that I found and read to them even thought they were older than the typical audience for that book. There are also many "fun" stories.... The Indian in the Cupboard, Dr Seuss' stories, The Swiss Family Robinson, the list could go on for miles. Reading to them when they are young encourages children to become readers themselves and readers are free to explore and learn in ways that nonreaders will never know or understand. IMHO it is one of the best ways to spend time with children.

"The Simpsons" needs to end. The show has been rehashing the same themes for years now, and, except for a good episode now and then, it just isn't funny. Also, the show now uses the same animation it employed for the film, and that technique doesn't translate well to the small screen.

But Matt Groenig once said in a tongue-and-cheek interview that he'd milk his creations for every dime he could get. At the time, I thought he was kidding. I guess he wasn't.

I would read The Giving Tree, which I did, many times over, to all of them.  It is all about the joy of giving and sacrifice.  It is the meaning of life.  As far as I know, it stuck with at least three of them.  I am very proud of that. I am not sure about the other one because she has made the choice to reject me completely so I don't know her anymore.

I Love You Forever is another book I believe in.  It is about loyalty and caring for people who have cared for you on the highest level.

Both are about living a full life.

There are so many good children's books out there.

Because Aunt Missy works in this field, Aries is going to get a lot of what are widely considered the classics. When he's still really little, that'll be most of Dr. Seuss's, Sandra Boynton's, and Eric Carle's bibliographies, Where the Wild Things Are, and Go Away Big Green Monster. When he gets a bit older, we'll add to that list Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (and the movie version will be forbidden until the kid's old enough to understand that "same title does NOT equal same story" - what a disappointing waste of time), Mo Willem's Pigeon books, Grimm's and Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tales, and selected works by Mercer Meyer and Stan and Jan Berenstein. A little older than that, and he'll be ready for the world of Roald Dahl.

My nieces are 17 and I have bought them all of the Harry Potter books, Lord of the Rings series, and we are working our way through Jim C. Hines' Princess series.  My daughter is three and loves the HP movie (1-4) (not ready for the 5-8).  We are still pretty much in the Caillou phase.  She gets the hand me downs from her cousins' book shelves...

Oh, wow... so many! Black Beauty is a dead cert, as my niece, even at 2 1/2, is horse-mad (just like her auntie!). The Wind in the Willows is another, though I came to it later in life, and definitely Harry Potter will be read at some point. She's a bit young for anything without a lot of pictures right now, but when she's older, we'll enjoy these ones together, I hope.

Writer's Block: Jumped the shark

Which television show continues to get worse every season and should just get cancelled already?

Oh, well... that's an interesting question. My main answer is:

"House MD" - seriously, how long can it last? I mean, seriously, soon they will probably start re-heating old ideas because I doubt many new things can happen on that show and they messed up enough things already. They messed up Cuddy, they messed up a lot of characters actually, did a couple od really not needed storylines and now what? Why don't just let it go? They could just let it go after S4 or S5, without messing anything up, where the show was actually still enjoyable, but no, of course, because somebody thinks that drama and getting together and then splitting up makes everything more interesting. Well, it doesn't. I get that people can change, but that much? No, thank you.

Honorable Mentions:
- "Two and a Half Men" - it was actually fun for the first... three seasons? But after that I got a little bit pointless and rebooting the old episodes with changing female characters. And adding a twist to the story after so many sesons, and using Ashton Kutcher for that matter... nope, just no. I don't mind Ashton Kutcher, but I doubt he'll make it any more watchable.
- "Rescue Me" - I liked the idea of the show and the take on firefighters, it didn't make them saints, they were people with problems like everybody else, but the more episodes I've seen the more I wondered what the frak they're doing. They basically messed up almost all the reasons why I started to watch this show. The idea can't work for a long time with this writing...
- "Chuck" - I just don't see this idea working anymore. I quit... well, somewhere in the middle of the second season because the idea actually stopped working for me.
- "Glee" - what do the writers plan to do, actually? Original charaters will grow up and leave high school and they'll just start bringing more new characters all the time? For how many seasons exactly do they plan to do that? I quit watching the show in the beginning of S2 and Im really, really glad I did.
- CSI - all of them. Sorry. Seriously, for the first seasons everything is great, but the more they make the more pointless some things get, because most of the ideas were done before and it's unavoidable. I really liked all three series, but I actually quit all of them. I think Las vegas stayed on my list for the longest time, but without grissom, without Warrick, it's not the same. I quit New York after Danny and Lindsay got together and now that I look at what's happening on the show I'm glad, and Miami? Don't even get me started.
- "Grey's Anatomy" - more and more drama, less things that were actually interesting. It pains me to say it, because in the beginning I really liked this show but now I just don't even recognize it. It's very, very sad.
- most of the reality shows hat actually don't bring anything new or good ("Jersey Shore"? "The Kardashians"? "The Amazing Race", "Real Housewives" - any version of that one), basically 90% of the MTV shows... I feel my IQ is dropping by even mentioning all those. Dance contest shows - especially in Polish TV, just be gone, please? And add to that, I'm forced to watch most of them, because kids that visit us are in love with most of these *le sigh*
- most of the pointless cartoons people make kids watch - "Spongebob" was fun in the beginning now, it's just plain stupid. And if we're talking cartoons, as sad as it is, "The Simpsons". It's just not the same show.
- WWE. Enough said.

Yeah... now I'll go an read people's answers to see if anybody agrees.

Writer's Block: A literary masterpiece

To a little child, I'd read Winnie the Pooh.

I still have a soft spot for the way language is played around with irreverently in Winnie the Pooh (thank you Apple for giving us a free copy with iBooks!).

A little older, I'd go for The Edge Chronicles (By Paul Stuart & Chris Riddell)

These are the books that cemented my love of fantasy forever and a day. Stuart populates the Edgeworld with such a vast variety of imaginative creatures, which are brought to life perfectly by the illustrations of Riddell. Skypirates, wood trolls, slaughterers (they're nice guys, don't let the red skin and name put you off), hoverworms...and that's just the first twenty pages or so!

Harry Potter

Needs no introduction, the book series that turned a generation on to reading. The books have aged really well, and grown alongside their audience. While I think there are better books out there (aren't there always?), they still hold a special place in my heart, and they way the world has reacted to them just proves that they will be around for a very long time.

His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman)

At times dark, sinister and scary, at others, heartwarming and thoughtprovoking, but there was never a dull moment. A cast of brilliantly flawed, strong characters and weighty themes made this shine for me. It's about bravery, strength in dark times and the courage to do what you know is right. Even the most fleeting character appearances feel fully fleshed out, every moment contributes to the series and propells the plot forwards.

Early teens, I'd steer them towards Neil Gaiman.

Witty, imaginative and always entertaining, I only wish someone had told me about him sooner!

(Just realised, this is just what I've read as a child/teen and enjoyed...in that case, I'm also throwing in The Book Theif by Markus Zusak, because it's stayed with me for years, is hauntingly beautiful and, like many of the books above, is about bravery and courage in very dark times.)

Writer's Block: A literary masterpiece

Which books will you certainly read to your children, nieces, nephews or godchildren?

It'll probably only be nieces and nephews for me. I don't know. Probably only whatever books they bring to me. My nephew has a bunch of books he has over here. Since he's only 2, it's just boring books like counting books with things like "how many fish are in the tank". He's not good at stopping at however many fish are in the tank. On the other hand, my sister-in-law (not his mom) started randomly counting in Spanish once when he wasn't answering. Might be kinda cool to teach them to count/say things in another language at that age.

But I'm not into kid things. All the things I liked as a kid, I can't stand now. So *shrug*. I'd prefer to not even read if I can help it. I don't think I can dumb myself down to read kid books D: I already have to listen to everyone else read them to my nephew when he comes over and ugh.

Well, my child is seventeen now so I can answer this one without speculating.

I always said if I ever had a child I'd read them The Little Prince but in the end it was too sad for my child's taste so I didn't. I think she still hasn't read it, which makes me sad.

God Bless the Gargoyles is a good one but I don't think I could read it to anyone because I start crying every time I read it. (I did buy her a copy when she was much older and she read it but I don't think she liked it all that much.)

I read her a lot of books; don't get wrong. I used to read to her all the time, but mostly just silly kids' series books that she liked. Some of which I liked too, and some of which I wanted to throw out the window.

The moral to this post is: You say now that you will read something beautiful and classic to your kids, but you will probably read them the Berenstain Bears and pretend you don't mind.
