Writer's Block: “We built this city on rock and roll”

My choice! Land of Confusion by Disturbed!

Link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6KXgjLqSTg

Here are the lyrics, and I choose it because the meaning behind the lyrics and the message, only someone who cares about mother nature understands.
Oh yes I'm a metal head! and proud of it! *sings along with the song*

"Land Of Confusion"
Performed by "Disturbed" of the "Ten Thousand Fists" Album!
[Originally by Genesis]

I must have dreamed a thousand dreams

Been haunted by a million screams

But I can hear the marching feet

They're moving into the street

Now, did you read the news today?

They say the danger has gone away

But I can see the fire's still alight

They're burning into the night

There's too many men, too many people

Making too many problems

And there's not much love to go around

Can't you see this is a land of confusion?

This is the world we live in

And these are the hands we're given

Use them and let's start trying

To make it a place worth living in

Oh, superman, where are you now?

When everything's gone wrong somehow?

The men of steel, these men of power

Are losing control by the hour

This is the time, this is the place

So we look for the future

But there's not much love to go around

Tell me why this is a land of confusion

This is the world we live in

And these are the hands we're given

Use them and let's start trying

To make it a place worth living in

I remember long ago

When the sun was shining

And all the stars were bright all through the night

In the wake of this madness, as I held you tight

So long ago

I won't be coming home tonight

My generation will put it right

We're not just making promises

That we know we'll never keep

There's too many men, too many people

Making too many problems

And there's not much love to go round

Can't you see this is a land of confusion?

Now, this is the world we live in

And these are the hands we're given

Use them and let's start trying

To make it a place worth fighting for

This is the world we live in

And these are the names we're given

Stand up and let's start showing

Just where our lives are going to

Writer's Block: “We built this city on rock and roll”

What are your favorite song lyrics, and why?

Yeah, first time on one of these prompts, but whatev.

For some reason, I find myself drawn to a few songs that probably have cheesy lyrics that I think are lovely.

One is Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time". The lyrics I love most are "after my picture fades/ and darkness has turned to gray/ watching through windows/ you're wondering if I'm okay/ secrets stolen from deep inside/ the drum beats out of time".

Another is Pat Benatar's "We Belong", especially the chorus: "we belong to the light/ we belong to the thunder/ we belong to the sound of the words we've both fallen under/ whatever we deny or embrace/ for worse or for better/ we belong, we belong/ we belong together".

Cat Stevens' "Trouble" is another song with lyrics that I love: "I've seen your eyes
and I can see death's disguise/ hangin' on me/ hangin' on me/ I'm beat, I'm torn/ shattered and tossed and worn/ too shocking to see/ too shocking to see".

The opening lyrics of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence" are more favorites: "Hello darkness, my old friend/ I've come to talk with you again/ because a vision softly creeping/ left its seeds while I was sleeping".

As for new songs, I LOVE Shiny Toy Guns' "Frozen Oceans", especially the second verse: "I still dream/ what should I believe?/ frozen shapes to bend/ impossible sets in".

And then there's the VERY cheesy that I just love to death... "Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera: "floating, falling, sweet intoxication/ touch me, trust me, savor each sensation".

But my all-time favorite lyrics? Blondie's "Fade Away and Radiate". The whole song is the most poetic way anyone could ever describe watching old movies late at night: "Ooh baby, watchful lines/ vibrate soft in brainwave time/ silver pictures move so slow/ golden tubes faintly glow".

"we are the champions-my friend, and we'll keep on fighting till the end...we are the champions,we are the champions,no time for losers, cause we are the champiooooons of the woooorld" :DDDD

Writer's Block: Riddle me this

What is something that just doesn't make sense to you?

The fac that, in our dreams, we see things and feel things that aren't really there--but most of all that we can actually touch them. And we talk and think and it's so weird to me...it doesn't make sense! And the universe doesn't really make sense because there's so much black space, so many stars...how do things exsist? The strangest things don't make sense to me. :P

Why in the world someone would try to convert you to their religion when the person already said NO THANKS I'M AN ATHEIST
I mean seriously, telling an Atheist that they're going to hell because they don't believe in God is like inserting your own foot into your mouth.
Would you like some salt and pepper to go with that?
If you're one of those people, prepare to be laughed at.

What are your favorite song lyrics, and why?
Right now i think it's Kimbra's "Cameo Lover" because the song is so cute, the singer is sooooo adorable and has one of those haunting beautiful voices even live. The song also reminds me of my boyfriend because he's kindof a Debbie Downer on most days :D
I recommend this song to anyone for making a shitty day, a better day!

Writer's Block: “We built this city on rock and roll”

What are your favorite song lyrics, and why?

Hmm, I got too many fav. lyrics. Why? Because they're just all like... Written by me. It's like they're exactly telling MY story. Like...I'm NOT a big Avril Lavigne fan. NO WAY. She's a marketing product, not herself... The entire rock chick image. Betting if I'd make her listen to the music I like, she'd cry and run to mommy.. Or at least think I'm insane or something. But, whatever... Yep; I admit, I do listen to that b**** now and than, bacause I hear it on the radio in some store, or when I (rarely) put on the radio. Those songs are so simple and about just any day things. There's no deeper message in it than the ways love goes, even when singing 'since you're gone...' when a loved one dies, or is so far away from home it hurts...

Lyrics just have to have some meaning for me, that I can relate to. Oh, yes, I DO listen to the 'Ding Dong song' by Swedish singer Günter. Because it suits the naughty mood.
Or 'Be mine' by Robyn. Yeah, EVERYONE knows the feeling of loving someone who chooses another one to be with above them...

But not all 'simple' lyrics are the lyrics I like. On the other hand I'd like a deeper message in lyrics. yeah yeah, I hear you: 'Lyrics, in Black metal? WHERE?' They DO have lyrics, if you listen a bit closer(or take the cd booklet with you, or searh the lyrics on the good ol' Google... ;-) ). They'll tell you stories about times gone by a very long time ago, they'll point out what they'd do to rapists and murderers, if killing and torturing wouldn't be illegal. But beccause it's illegal, they have to write about it and bring it in the music they create...

So there's no specific song text I can give to you. That depends on my mood... Oh! But, to me, lyrics are the most important things in a song (oops, I guess I'm no musician, as guitar players mostley like the guitar in songs, for instance...). Sometimes it even makes me love, or just hate a song. Even just ONE sentence...
Hmm, an still, I'm unable to write 'lyrics' myself. Hmm, guess we can conclude that I like the lyrics I'd write myself if I had the talent...

Writer's Block: “We built this city on rock and roll”

Y'know, I was just listening to that WBER interview where John Flansburgh claims that song is the worst song he's ever heard, and the first time he heard it, he had to pull over to the side of the road to listen to it because he couldn't believe how bad it was, and thought he'd never hear it again in his life.

But to actually answer the question, my favorite lyricists, in chronological order, are W.S. Gilbert, Cole Porter, and Elvis Costello, and pretty much anything any of them write is always gold.

You and I will be reborn in a future place and time
If everything our Hindu breathren says is true.
In an age of things that hover
You and I will still be lovers
And we'll say to ourselves "That was then, and this is too."
We'll still find the happenin' hot spots
We'll still cruise the cool casinos
You'll still fly me to the moon
Although the moon to which you fly me
Could be Phobos or Diemos
The psychic worms from Rigel 9 which control everything we do
Will make us think that was then
And 3010
Is exactly the same as 1962
Don't expect any changes my friend --
That was then and this is too.

What are your favorite song lyrics, and why?

1) Breathing by Lifehouse
'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me

It's so hard to find someone to just sit together in comfortable silence, don't you think?
2) 23 by Jimmy Eat World
I won't always love what I'll never have
I won't always live in my regrets

A wake-up call of sorts. I want too many things and I regret far too often. I should let go of some.
3) Stuck In A Moment (You Can't Get Out Of) by U2
It's just a moment
This time will pass

When I'm stuck in a downward spiral of self-doubt and uncertainty, this song always reminds me that it'll be over eventually and help me get over it.
4) Just Like You by Three Days Grace
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You’re wrong if you think that I’ll be just like you

I don't have the best of relationship with The Mother. Mainly because she wants me to be just like her and I can't. I don't want to.
5)

And so on. This is getting long! XD

there are many to be honest. right now, I find Run DMC's "It's Tricky" getting stuck in my head. "They offer coke, and lots of dope but we just leave it alone" is one part of the lyrics that stick in my crawl.

New song by Anthrax, "Fight em Till You Cant", has been getting a lot of play by me. so those lyrics are stuck in my head, particularly the passage that says "I'll end you". havent learned all the lyrics yet, but its quite catchy.

Where my money goes each month, its like I get paid twice a month to pay others more then I make. F'N bills... But really I have never been able to dissect a sentence, not can I explain a noun, verb, our adjective. And my dream is to become a writer...lol... Many have tried to explain it to me but I can't seem to understand it no matter what or how they explain it.

Writer's Block: Riddle me this

What is something that just doesn't make sense to you?

Death? Myself? Life?
The list goes on.

I can condense it down to not knowing what my place in life and death and everything else might be, in spite of what people tell me.
But I get confused about those things often, and I couldn't be the only one.

I don't make sense to me anymore. Do I see different to the people who know me? I feel different to me.

I'm not surprised though, I almost expect the last year to have changed me some.

Writer's Block: Funny people

Are you more of an entertainer who makes others laugh? Or do you prefer to be entertained?

I'm not sure about the laughing part, but I think in essence I'm an entertainer down to my soul; I feel more myself when I can express to people something that makes them think or at least forget their trouble for a time.
I get more pleasure from that than I do most other things in the world, more so than I get from anything self-indulgent. But it can be exhausting, sometimes after a long day I feel the burden of it but it still is ultimately what I feel I should be doing with my life.
I'm sure there are other paths that make a more sudden and life-effecting mark on those around them, but I'm content knowing that I may have at least taken away some of the heavy mundane weight that so many people in this city seem to struggle with day to day.

Unfortunately, somewhat along those lines, I think I'm going to have to actually relent to finding another job this winter; last winter was a strain so far as keeping up with the rent and such and that's an unfair burden to stress Vince with.

I'll have to start scouting around, best case maybe I can get a job at one of the clubs or bars locally, and if not I'll start roaming the retail areas and see if I have any luck there.

Writer's Block: Riddle me this

What is something that just doesn't make sense to you?

Something that doesn't make sense is when people piss and moan and bitch about shit but do the same thing. I think we're all guilty of it and some point or another but when it's so blatantly obvious it's ridiculous. I figure, if you're gonna bitch about something, then try not to make it so obvious that you're doing it too.

Writer's Block: Riddle me this

What is something that just doesn't make sense to you?

What I find most confusing is the lack of credit we are willing to give our ancestors at times. "They couldn't have possibly.." I mean, what do WE know? We can hardly survive without electricity.. who are we to judge what they could and couldn't do?

What's more likely? We don't know what it took to get things done back then; or Aliens helped them..

It's Stephen King's birthday! Who is your favorite character from one of his books?

Not typically a Stephen King fan. I've never taken the time to read the books, as the movies quite bore me, except of course for "It" which traumatized me as a child. From movies though, I really enjoyed Duddits from Dreamcatcher. Didn't get into the rest of the movie, with the ass-aliens and all...

Writer's Block: Riddle me this

What is something that just doesn't make sense to you?
Dreams don't make a lick of sense to me.

Like last night, one minute I dreaming of baking a cheese cake with DTH and then David Tennant shows up saying that he's the Doctor and starts jabbering on about banana cheesecake, but half way through the dream he starts talking like he does in Hamlet and ecturing about the fall of the Roman Empire.

At least it was less strange than my David Tennant water-polo/Spartan dream like two weeks ago.

Writer's Block: Desert island

List three books that have changed your life:
Books, thankfully, have the power to change lives. I have always avidly thought them to be the most influential part of our society, the politicians of the artists, or the scholars. I have always seen more clarity in books than in the whole of humanity; on paper, the critic can critique and the weeper can weep, and so we are exposed to the most raw form of humanity through literature. Unfortunately, not all of the raw aspects of humanity are likable or even remotely lovable. The deepest treches of the human psyche are filled with deceit, hatred, greed, and lust. We are the embodiment of evil, but similarly the image of beauty and free will. In our free will we can choose to become the scum of the Earth, or to rise above our malign nature. That being said, my preference of books are those which allow us to see both sides:

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoesvsky:
An extremely captivating psychological thriller, Dostoevsky managed to skillfully wriggle himself into the minds of his readers. Through his protagonist, Rasky (his real name is much longer and I'll be honest, I can not spell it), he created a universal character. In Rasky he made a man we all relate to. However the interesting part is that Rasky is not only a murderer, but a lunatic with a superman complex who constantly participates in vivd dialogue-- with himself. As you read the novel, you begin to question your own sanity and morality. It's truly breathtaking, Dostoevsky's style is so down-to-earth and thoughtful, dripping with Biblical allusions and psychological interpretation. (Still reading it right now...)

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom:
Less known than his best-seller Tuesdays with Morrie, The Five People was the first Mitch Albom book I read. It's a book about a seemingly unimportant man who finds out, upon his death, the impact that he had on the lives of others. I am always startled by Mitch Albom's simplicity in writing. Very straight-forward and very clean in his diction, but still managing to somehow get a point across. This book was probably the first real piece of literature that I ever read, the first book for adults I encountered. At the age of 11 I had started to question who I would meet in heaven, who's lives did I change drastically, who did I kill? As I grow, this book remains a timeless classic for me, opening up more doors to my self-worth with every read.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Probably, hands down, one of the greatest books ever written. Twisted, absurd, nonsensical, and insightful, this novel introduced me to my prevailing belief of exitentialism. It baffled me with it's absurdity. It happens to be the favorite book of one of my friends, so by Chapter 3 I took to asking him "Uhm, what the hell is going on...". And to my retrospective non-surprise, I remained that way until the very last word of the book. It transitions quickly and awkwardly from time period to time period, such that you don't know you're reading a flashback until you're half way through it. It manages to disclose wonderful commentary on the absurdity of the human species, it's irrational search for meaning in the universe, and it's derisory aspect of war and status. The dialogue is repetitive and ridiculous. It does not follow any basic logic whatsoever, and the most extraordinary part of the book is it's introduction to the phrase "catch 22." However, you'll have to read it find out!

What is something that just doesn't make sense to you?
Religion. Sorry, but I can't believe in a God/gods/whatever who allows people to suffer. If God invented the whole world, then God could have designed it so that we had fulfilling and meaningful lives that were also free of pain. So either God didn't invent the whole world/isn't omnipotent, or God decided that he preferred for humans to suffer, in which case God is an asshole. Or God doesn't exist. I can't believe the first two, so I believe the third.

What is something that just doesn't make sense to you?
How American big business will cut payroll for the people that actually produce income for the company while keeping the doors open on days like Sunday when the figures clearly show a loss because people don't shop on Sunday. All the while the people at the corporate office, which don't serve the customer therefore don't produce income, continue to rake in thier fat checks and work thier full hours.
IE AutoZone, Advance Auto & O'Reilly Auto. In my town there isn't enough sales to support 1 store yet between the 3 there are 7 open on Sunday. Each one is open because the other is open. None of them will make a good business decision and close which would lead to all of them closing and then that payroll could be used during the week where it's needed. (and yes, I've worked for them so I do know what I'm talking about)
No wonder Chinas kicking our corporate ass. Thier cuts start at the down and work thier way down. The people at the bottom are the last to take a cut. Of course if it reaches that far the company is doomed anyway.

When people get mad at me for something I didn't actually write, or attribute to me atittudes or stances I've never publicly advocated. If I had a nickel for every time someone wrote some varation of "Jason believes/thinks __________" I could buy a very nice sandwhich.

Few have tried the revolutionary tactic of actually asking me directly whay I thought about something.

Without "reverse engineering" from Alien technology....how did we go from the model-T 15 mph, to an MP3 player the size of a postage stamp that holds 2000 songs....in 100 years.

Whether humans have been around for 50,000 years or a million, none of it makes very much sense that this "blink of an eye" sliver of time should magically be this dynamic with out some radical input. I don't think the average person looks around at "this" life we are living...and sees it for how extremely different it is from the life that was lived only three generations past (two in my case).

I work at an oxygen company, the kind of place that helps little old ladies get to bingo without keeling over in a gasping heap. The sort of employment that watches nice guys succumb to lung disease brought on by the military's idea that lighting up is a great way to pass the time between enemy fire and KP duty.

I work at an oxygen company, which means job security.

Because people, supposedly intelligent ones who access the internet to learn how to operate their lives, haven't noticed the warnings, the stats, that say "Hey goofball... smoking is BAD!"

I don't get it. We're supposed to be smarter than this, right? And yet most of our area branches feature respiratory therapists who are paid to explain oxygen use (and what the patients might have done in life to now require it) and these same workers, bright souls with degrees and twice my pay, often smoke themselves.

Huh?

But I digress... It is not mine to question. It is mine to cash my paycheck and know that, despite our advances in knowledge, I have a wealth of future patients lining up to keep me employed. Including, but not limited to, my own two siblings.

In the opposite fashion, when an athiest tells me how much they dismiss the idea of a God, saying something like,
"I don't know how anyone could believe something like that," "Science is based on fact, not fairy-tales," or "Religion is meant to control people."

We get that you think God, Gods, Goddesses, dieties, and divine beings are all horeshit, but it's not really appealing for you to bring this up at every possible interval, either. Maybe I have entertained the idea of a diety, or maybe I am a religious or spiritual person. You telling me that I'm a empty-headed sheep for having faith in something that isn't fully documented in a science book isn't really a good catalyst for our friendship. Also, just because I might have some spiritual tendencies about me does not mean that I am a "poison to the human race," that I'm, "trying to make everyone else adhere to a set of beliefs not based on fact," or that I'm, "just someone who can't make decisions for myself, and therefore relies on someone else to make decisions" about my life for me.

I'm just a gal that maybe is religious, and maybe isn't. What I really don't understand is how these people think that by shoving their personal beliefs onto me that they are somehow accomplishing anything outside of aggravating me incredibly.

When people try to convert others to their religious beliefs. This goes both ways.

When a Christain person decides that it is their duty to tell me how to live my life, and says something like,
"You need to accept Jesus into your life," "You simply haven't seen the light yet," or "____ should be illegal because it is against God's will,"

These are all unacceptable statements to me, and it baffles me that these people think they are making legitimate points to someone who doesn't share their point of view. I also don't understand how they don't see this as being rude. Don't tell other people what to think about their own lives. Free will and the ability to make personal choices was probably given to humans for a reason. And who says I'm a bad person? You? My free will to not want to hear you chattering on about what I should and shouldn't do is in full effect. I can make my own decisions, remember?

Writer's Block: “We built this city on rock and roll”

What are your favorite song lyrics, and why?

To this day one of the first songs that comes to mind when I am asked my favorite song is Bring Me To Life by Evanescence

How can you see into my eyes like open doors?
Leading you down into my core where I’ve become so numb
Without a soul my spirit's sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there and lead it back home

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

now that I know what I’m without
you can't just leave me
breathe into me and make me real
bring me to life

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

Bring me to life
(I've been living a lie, there's nothing inside)
Bring me to life

frozen inside without your touch
Without your love, darling
only you are the life among the dead

all this time I can't believe I couldn't see
kept in the dark but you were there in front of me
I’ve been sleeping a thousand years it seems
got to open my eyes to everything
Without a thought, without a voice, without a soul
don't let me die here
there must be something more
bring me to life

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

(Bring me to life)
I’ve been living a lie, there’s nothing inside
(Bring me to life)
