What do you like most about LiveJournal?

I can make posts a hella lot longer than a facebook update and if I fall horribly behind, it's easier for me to catch-up. People on my friend's list (and myself) are less likely to do the, let's post a random video, posts, and instead have posts with more substance.

Do you think there will ever be world peace?
So long as opinions differ there will not be peace. Not because of the difference of opinion (that is healthy) but because there are enough people in the world that are afraid of people who disagree with them and therefore will react violently to peoples views, worryingly people like this regularly seem to be running countries.

Do you think there will ever be world peace?
Maybe, in a couple thousand years when a giant asteroid crashing into the earth, a catastrophic geologic event, a plague, or second Ice Age causes the majority of the human race to die off. Yeah, at that point the world will be pretty peaceful.

I can't really see world peace coming in my lifetime, or even the lifetime of my children or their children. For the world to experience peace, we, as humans, either need to experience something uncontrollable and horrific that effects us all and makes us unite,  or we need to be GONE. Peace won't come without a GREAT loss. It's always darkest just before dawn.

I feel great changes will come in my lifetime. But, I don't know how lasting those changes will be. I mean, in ancient Greece (before Christianity came and fucked everything up) it was common and perfectly acceptable to be gay and to be a sexually free man or woman. Despite the misogynist way of the Greeks at that tie, they were incredibly forward-thinking/progressive! Today, most Greeks are Catholic and it's this horrible thing to be gay and Greek.

It's just, we're so small and insignificant, any change or progress we make can be washed away with a simple change in power or a war, or a tsunami that wipes out a civilization. We're NOTHING. I mean, really. We are ANTS- NO, we're less than ants, we're DIRT. We're the subatomic particles that make up the dirt. We're...NOTHING. We're so fragile and so is the world we build our lives around. The idea that the human race could ever be capable of long-lasting world peace is a NICE idea, but it's kind of bullshit.

Writer's Block: Happy birthday John Lennon!

I doubt so.

It is a part of being human: take things apart.
We are have this death wish,
either for ourselves,
or for others.

Much of the time, it is the latter.
But when all hope is gone, when we are forced to the end of the road,
we have a way of fighting back;
even if it means tearing down the things that is forcing you.

Anyway, who is John Lennon?
I heard of him,
but never really knew him.

Maybe it is time to do so.

Writer's Block: Happy birthday John Lennon!

Do you think there will ever be world peace?
not a chance. there's always going to be someone, somewhere, who's going to cause death and destruction. Whether or not it's on a world wide scale, or just a country, but surely there's never going to be world peace, proper world peace, with no one dying in vicious attacks, until people stop murdering and injuring each other.

Writer's Block: Happy birthday John Lennon!

In a word no. We can only hope. Unfortunately violence is in our human nature. If it weren't for conflict we wouldn't be where we are today. Evolution itself is conflict, it what formed us from apes and gave us the power to contemplate these things. Maybe if were lucky we will rise above our evolutionary ways and learn to live with ourselves.  I can't see a day where we all can agree or at least tolerate each other, there are just too many people and too many viewpoints.

Writer's Block: Freewill vs. fate

I dont really believe in fate. I think you make your own future and you can change it to whatever you want it to be. But I do think people are meant for eachother. It may be the romantic in me, but Id like to think people are made for eachother. That theres someone out there for everyone to love and be loved by. We cant survive with out love and compassion. Maybe its because I have someone that I think people are made for eachother but, I think I would think that anyway. I never thought I would find anyone. I remember thinking even at a young age that I wouldnt find anyone. and Id be blessed and lucky if I did (i am in no way religous (agnostic)) and Im so happy Im not alone. Hes my other half and if he wasnt made for me, then fates been very kind. I think its destined. People are destined to be together. Whether it works out or not is up to them though. Sometimes whats destined isnt always best, and leads you to something better.

Writer's Block: World Peace?

Do you think there will ever be world peace?
No there will never be peace in this world. So many say they are willing to fight for world peace and some of the people are the same ones who elect People who bring us closer to war, the same ones who love a spar, the same ones who think they know better than everyone else are better than everyone else, the same ones who are to dang lazy to get off the butt and help the ones who truly need it. As long as there are people in this world who are to ignorant and prideful to admit when they are wrong or say sorry we will never have peace As along as greedy people - people who are never satisfied no matter what- exists in this world there will never be wold peace because someone will always want more. Though having world peace would be an amazing medical to behold. I am srry to say it is and will be impossible on this earth in this day and age. And that is truly a shame.

Peace is relative. Looking back this may actually be one of the most peaceful times in history. None of the worlds powers are fighting with each other certainly there are some conflicts going on, but i strain my mind to think of a time when there were not. Even the pax romana was only peace in rome. I am sure there were on recorded battles being wage in europe and africa amongst the non romans. If you define peace as a time where no man is trying to kill another man I just dont see it. If you think of peace as a time with few major conflicts in the world I think that has happened in my lifetime.

Do you think there will ever be world peace?
Despite humanity's focus on trying to find what's best for everybody, no one can take into account what every single person needs or wants. Eventually, interests will collide with each other, and when those interests belong to bigger entities conflict is unavoidable.

So no, world peace will never exist. And who knows? Perhaps, despite the horrors of war, peace wouldn't be any better for everyone. But that's just my opinion.

Do you think there will ever be world peace?

Honestly speaking, no - despite the absolute beauty in that utopia, it cannot become reality. Our ‘humanity’ is too weak.

Even if humans constantly try to fool and convince themselves otherwise, we are unable to suppress the ancient urge of survival. No better than animals, we are chained by nature like other beasts, be it a huge lion or small ant, we not only fight other species but also our own, in order to secure the future of our bloodline and genes. We feel the instincts of wanting to spread out, becoming more powerful, always seeking better opportunities. We are greedy, cruel and do not hold back.

However, that does not mean we should not dream; we have to try reaching that utopia, no matter how faint and far away it may seem, in order to maintain the right balance. After all, and once again, we are no different from animals, slaves of nature.

Writer's Block: Happy birthday John Lennon!

Do you think there will ever be world peace?
The phrasing suggests that humanity is destined to only occupy one world, our planet Earth. Peace can't be assured within those confines, no. Power-sharing (politics) and arbitration (law) cannot achieve a consensus universal enough to insure the end of hostilities. The aim of a civil war or secession is to veto the old power-sharing regime whenever an opposing coalition becomes too dominant. There isn't a power-sharing system that I know of employed in the last millennium that avoids this dynamic.

The only political system I know of that achieved virtually complete peace over a significant swath of land over a significant amount of land was the Gaelic system known as Tanistry. This system never rotted within but eventually succumbed to Nordic and British invasion. The Gaels did however engage in regular ritualistic combat similar to indigenous American tribes.

Anyway, the short answer is actually yes, once the costs for dissenting factions becoming starfaring civilizations of their own are no longer prohibitive. There's ample real estate around any given star for a thriving civilization to take hold. Or, we could imagine "World Ships" that travel near light-speed. So long as they head away from Earth and constantly accelerate, no dominating empire should ever manage to catch up. So long as these ships cannot be intercepted, it becomes possible to live without engaging in wars with outsiders.

The only remaining issue becomes the internal politics of your World Ship. It will surely help if there was a consensus about the terms all agreed with before boarding. If your founding principles are unanimously agreed to, then there ought to be little conflict within the first generation.

That's as far as I wish to entertain the question at this time.

Writer's Block: Happy birthday John Lennon!

Do you think there will ever be world peace?
Well, there was world peace at one time. So I don't see why there can't be any now. It is hard to think wheter
there can be worl peace because people cause far too many conflicts between eachother. I think that there is only world peace where humans are gone. Then, there will be no concept of peace, war, or anything like that.

Writer's Block: Happy birthday John Lennon!

Do you think there will ever be world peace?
Honestly, no. Using conflict to end conflict will only cause more conflict. There is too much greed in humanity for world peace to ever truly exist in it's purest form. The closest we can get is an era of reduced conflict with systems in all forms of places that balance problems.

Writer's Block: Happy birthday John Lennon!

Do you think there will ever be world peace?

The death of a man as peaceful as John Lennon is evidence that peace will never exist, never be given the time of day. As long as diversity in opinions and culture continue, war will exist. People are always willing to kill/die to protect their ideologies. Peace would only exist in a world of complete homogeny in thought, culture, race, religion, and government. It is sad to say, but it may never happen.
Elizabeth Hurley

Writer's Block: Riddle me this

What is something that just doesn't make sense to you?
I'm taken aback at so many answering that they don't understand the nature of evil or various cultures they don't belong to. Evil is so easy to grasp, after all. It is typically an tendency to satisfy base desires in the absence of governing forces like ethics or empathy.

Cultures are understandably a bit more complex, but it shouldn't be that difficult to uncover and understand their core premises, things like ideals and founding myths.

I realize most were actually using the prompt to vent, rather than actually express genuine bewilderment.

If you want a genuine answer from me, a great many things are incomprehensible to me by virtue of my inability to concentrate. Advanced mathematics always escaped my ability to focus. I also couldn't focus on scripts outside the Latin alphabet well enough to learn to read non-Romance languages. I also find working with my hands in many ways difficult to the point of being incomprehensible. I realize I must sound close to worthless, but it isn't self-pity. I am content that I can do a number of things that prove my worth.

Writer's Block: Happy birthday John Lennon!

World Peace is something we all strive for, everyone would like to think of the ideal and hope that the world will one day be at peace with itself. But as cynical and negative as this sounds, sadly because the majority of people on this planet that we call home, have become self obsessed and consumed, individuals arent open to talk to each other, understand each other, care for each other as some of us would hope.

It is a sad thought that the world will forever go on fighting with itself, its people fighting with themselves, over the most menial of things. But then again we all live our lifes fighting with ourselves. Many people have said things to me over my 20 years about the earth and the idea of it being in peace with itself, and one phrase rings strong in my mind as I write this. It is something my Mum has always said to me, and although neither of us are particularly religious, its meaning is understandable by all.

"If heaven is a place where everything is ideal, peaceful, calm and tranquil, where individuals understand, care and love one another, then there has to exist a hell which is the complete opposite. We are all living in hell, on earth."

Now I know to some it will mean nothing, but think about that phrase, and actually it rings true. The earth really is the opposite of a eutopia. It is a place where dreams are made and broken, hearts are made and broken, people are born and die, lives get built and are destroyed. ]

So will there ever be world peace? Sadly it is something that is incredibly unlikely because of the selfish nature that us as humans have inhabited and adopted into our everyday personalities.

Where is one new place you’d like to visit?

Or, as we said:
In Fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
Lorenzo died,
(Innocent-Alexander)
and the Moors were driven out of Granada.

Dang, that was an interesting year, for a lot more reasons than Columbus.

But, on topic, as Bilbo puts it "for still there are so many things that I have never seen/In every wood, in every spring there is a different green"; there are too many places, foreign and domestic that I want to see for the first time, places I've been I want to see new sides of, or places I've been I want to share with different people and see through their eyes. So, in the face of all those places I'd love to see and still hold on hope to do so, I'll say the one that I will never: outer space. Not as far as the moon, but to be in a stable orbit, and look down at the earth, and out at the vast expanse "where no man has gone before".

Love is something that happens. Like a plant imo; You can choose to place yourself in a situation conducive to its growth, nurture it and it will grow. Similarly, you can leave it out in the cold and let it wither. By that standard I would have to say it can also be a choice.

A bit of both then?

Writer's Block: Remembering Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs once said, "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life." He inspired a generation to Think Different. How has the legacy of Apple's co-founder influenced your life?
Very little, particularly since I consider WOZniak the bigger contributor of the two in the original company that is Apple.

But Jobs KNEW talent.... here's an example.  Forgive me for quoting Wikipedia, but I've known of this story for some time:

They had an idea to turn Pong into a single player game, where the player would use a ball to deplete a wall of bricks without missing the ball on its rebound. Bushnell was certain the game would be popular, and the two partnered to produce a concept. Al Alcorn was assigned as the project manager, and began development with Cyan Engineering in 1975. The same year, Alcorn assigned Steve Jobs to design a prototype. Jobs was offered US$750, with an extra $100 each time a chip was eliminated from the prospected design. Jobs promised to complete a prototype within four days.

Jobs noticed his friend Steve Wozniak—employee of Hewlett-Packard—was capable of producing designs with a small number of chips, and invited him to work on the hardware design with the prospect of splitting the $750 wage. Wozniak had no sketches and instead interpreted the game from its description. To save parts, he had "tricky little designs" difficult to understand for most engineers. Near the end of development, Wozniak considered moving the high score to the screen's top, but Jobs claimed Bushnell wanted it at the bottom;
Wozniak was unaware of any truth to his claims. The original deadline was met after Wozniak did not sleep for four days straight. In the end 50 chips were removed from Jobs' original design. This equated to a US$5,000 bonus, which Jobs kept secret from Wozniak, instead only paying
him $375.[

Another interested Tidbit, from the Wozniak link in the above article.

By 1975, Wozniak withdrew from the University of California, Berkeley and developed the computer that eventually made him famous. By himself he designed the hardware, circuit board designs, and operating system for the Apple I.[3] With the Apple I design, he and Jobs were largely working to impress other members of the Palo Alto-based Homebrew Computer Club, a local group of electronics hobbyists very interested in computing, one of several key centers which established the home hobbyist era, essentially creating the microcomputer industry over several years. Unlike other Home Brew competitors, the Apple had an easy-to-achieve video capability that immediately created buzz and drew a crowd when it was unveiled.[3]

So I do "think different"; I'd rather be a Woz, but get a little more credit and money.

This is assuming that I got the cash to afford such a concept, which I don't. However, I would love to reenact Mark Twain's four year long epic journey across North America, South America, Africa, Austrelia, Asia and Europe as recoded in his seven hundred and eighteen page autobiography Followinging the Equator.  Following the Equator which Mark Twain published in 1897 depicted such an adventure.  It would be nice if I had the cash to afford such an epic journey around the world.  Oh well, some people have all the luck.

I don't think love is a choice. You can't choose to fall in love with someone. Then it would be easy!
However, I don't think there is already a person out there, you just need to find them, kind of deal. I don't believe in fate. Nothing is predetermined.

Behind the Counter. It would be a behind the scenes reality show about Starbucks. Why? Because I work there and I think it would be super fucking interesting to see the inner workings of the backrooms. So much shit goes down. So much drama, so much entertainment. Also, it would be good for the rest of the world to see how shitty a customer they can really be, and how much shit barista's have to put up with daily, and act like it's not destroying their actual soul.

I'd watch it.

Do you think there will ever be world peace?
It depends on the day you ask me - today I'm feeling rather pessimistic. I do believe it is entirely possible to achieve world peace, if we ever will is another matter, we might blow the whole world up before then! But while there is an earth it is entirely possible that we can. However, I strongly believe it can only happen once we all realize there actually is no such thing as as good and evil as spiritual entities. There is only healthy correct thinking and unhealthy disordered thinking. The world is only a bad place because of much misunderstanding of ourselves and each other, and illness - social and mental. No one is actually spiritually evil at all. That is to say if we were all healthy mentally - our default mind set is to be good, as that is the sensible option.
