Writer's Block: What a wonderful word

What is your favorite word, and why?

Favourite word: Indomitable.
Honourable mentions: Imperturbable and Intangible

I've actually been thinking about this question since I first saw it. I'm something of a philologist, so of course I have to answer it, but there are so many ways in which I can love a word. I can love the sound, the meaning, the spelling, the origin. I can love a word's entire etymology, or the way the way it feels when you say it aloud. I can love a word for the subtle nuances behind its actual meaning. I can love a word simply because it is dead and forgotten, or because its sound is so well suited to its meaning. I can even love a word for no other reason than that an author I love loved it before me (cyclopean* and wherefore†, I'm looking at you).
I've been having a love affair with the English Language for as long as I can remember (and my childhood memories start earlier than most). Over the course of the past two decades I have fallen irredeemably in love with all sorts of words. But when it comes down the the very root of it all, when I spend a month contemplating thousands of words and why I love them, the one word which encompasses at least a little bit of every reason for which I can love a word is a heavy, open, polysyllabic, vastly useful but rarely used Latinate word with overtones of nonconformism‡.

*Lovecraft
† Keats
‡ nonconformism itself is one of my less favourite words word. -ism (and the related -ist) is a weak-sounding suffix.

What would you do if you had a million dollars?

If I had a million dollars, right away... I'd invest as much as I'd need to in order to work part-time at something I like doing, maybe freelance journalism. Ideally, this amount would be interest from the investment, not drawing on the principal.

The rest I would try to invest into causes that I see as important. I'm not entirely sure what I would do with so much money - I know that Immanuel Community Services in Seattle would get a large donation. They are helping so many so quietly. I would probably investigate where need was greatest in rural/suburban Oregon and try to give some away there as well. I feel like these communities are so often forgotten.

And, as a personal gift, I'd buy myself a newer, more comfortable car. While that's a little bit selfish, I've had the same 1998 sedan a long time and it's not quite what I'd like. I suppose I'd look for a vehicle with versatility and good fuel economy, maybe a Subaru (Outback) wagon.

Writer's Block: It's payday!

I would buy my parents a house near the beach and their dream cars. I pay off friends debt, pay off my cousins student loans. Pay for me and my siblings schooling. Give a portion of it to charity (what goes around, comes around!) and send a good amount to my family overseas. Finally, I would save the rest (if there's any) for my future. Gosh, if only someone could hand me a million dollars.

OMG I wish this would actually come true very soon (like, within the next 2 months soon)! T0T

If I had a million dollars, I would, in this order:
1) Save 30% for myself
2) Settle my debts (should be less than 5% of the US$1,000,000)
3) Donate 20% to the advocacies that I actively support (all Philippine-based and Philippine-oriented)
4) Fly to the US and enjoy a month with interploy and xfridays_child, not necessarily in that order ... or better yet, persuade both of them to return with me to the Philippines! (should cost lest than 10% of US$1,000,000)
5) Upgrade my computer (should be less than 1% of the US$1,000,000)
6) Buy new shoes (I break an average of 4 pairs a year. I wish I was kidding. Also, should cost less than 1% of the US$1,000,000)
7) Invest 10% in the stock market (NOT playing it) and in government-issued retail treasury bonds
8) Invest 10% as seed money for my future with interploy
9) Give away the remaining 10% to deserving individuals, not necessarily those belonging to the poverty line, of my choosing

What would you do if you had a million dollars?

I would fix this house up to save it, after I moved.

Yea I am currently thinking of the Pacific North West, finding a smallish town and locating about 10-15 min out on a hill side with a view of the sea. Full studio space and equipped, space for visitors and lot's of storage and display space.

Some place within 2 hours of a major city, but a place with more like minded folks. Enough studio and long term space for guest artists that might want to get away for a few months.

Solar and wind and maybe geothermal for power and heat. Build it as green as possible, extra energy back to the grid if possible, and have a place where I can have nature, the trees, sky, earth and waters in my life every day. No lawn, just woods with a living and working space in it where I don't see my neighbors in a car, but grazing, flying and being wild.

That's easy... I'd invest/save/put away half of it and use the other to help my husband start our business! He wants a bakery, I'm thinking some kind of bakery cafe type thing. Not only does it help us stretch our creative expression through the cooking of delicious sweets and yummy foods, a business of our own would help us earn the money to do the things we want to do. He wants to buy a bigger boat, better car, bigger house and plot of land for raising a family and having a mini farm/ranch type thing. We're talking a large vegetable garden, an herb garden, an orchard, chickens, horses, maybe a pig or two, a couple dogs, living spaces for each of them and all that. I want the money to be able to go back home more than once every other year if need be. And the money to spend on Disneyland, Disney World, Euro Disney, Hong Kong Disney...you get the drift. =P It'd also be nice to be able to buy things on-line and not have to worry about spending an arm and a leg on shipping costs. Shipping to an island sucks!! And then I'd pay back my parents for the $10k+ that I wasted when they sent me off to a year of college... Dorm life. Whee. *vomit* Not my thing.

So yeah. That's what I'd do if I had a million dollars.

What would you do if you had a million dollars?

Let's assume here, for the sake of answering this, that I was already settled in London by that time, or else I would be buying airfare and a house there the very next day.

But say I was already across the pond.

I would buy a pony.

And for all that this sounds like the Default Jacey Answer to Everything (which admittedly it is), I am actually entirely serious. I would buy a pony -- a Thoroughbred mare, to be specific. I would then ship said pony to Japan, and breed her with Charismatic, and have a tiny little Charismatic-baby of my very own.

I have wanted Charismatic-babies since I was...oh god, fifteen? Fourteen? TEN YEARS LATER AND I HAVE STILL NOT OUTGROWN THIS URGE. But it's okay, because I still look fifteen, too, and watching Charismatic run was literally one of the most formative experiences of my entire life. All of my love for horses? Came from him. ♥ (Read the wiki article, and I'm sure you'll be able to understand why.)

Really, I just want to own Charismatic himself, and need to become independently wealthy so that I can nab him as soon as his market value goes down/no one but me cares anymore. :(

I am kind of not kidding. It's likely only a matter of time before no one else does care anymore, and god knows at the rate I'm going I'm going to end up needing a farm anyway. Cough.

And obviously if I had any leftover monies there would be books. I could very easily spend the entire million just on books, honestly, but I do have to prioritise my ponies too. ♥

My two LJ friends that answered this gave sensible, smart-girl answers, all investing and debt-payoff.

Sure, I'd pay off my debts, those are annoying. But I know I'd blow the rest. I want a house, with trees and room for a garden in the backyard. I want to study things I can't afford now, like ballet and horsebackriding. I want lots of expensive artist's tools, like leather, leathercrafting tools, a loom, and so much more.

And dear Gods, do I want to travel. All over Europe first, then some quality time in Australia- my husband misses home and I've not seen the whole west side of the country, or the center! There's practical things like a car, laundry machines, a new mattress. (I've been waking up every other day with a sore back, that's not a good sign. But that mattress is over twenty years old, it's not a surprise that it's no good now.)

Being this poor, I'm pretty sure I'd spend it all, and spend it fast. But maybe I'd get some cool stuff, and I know I'd have a great time for however many months or years it lasts.

Writer's Block: Tea for two

If you could spend a day with any fictional character, who would it be and what would the two of you do?

How can you make me choose?! The answer to this question largely depends on my mood and what fandoms I'm presently involved in. Right now, it happens to be a tie between Loki from the Thor movie (derp, so original answer!), Steve Rogers from the Captain America movie, or Sam Winchester from Supernatural (herpa derp, also super original). If I chose Loki, I would just want to pick his brain and maybe watch him do his magic, if he'd allow it. If I chose Steve, I would take that sweet ass on the most kawaii date of all time. If I chose Sam, I'd give him hugs all fucking day and just hang out with him. Let him have a day being relatively normal for once. I have a bad feeling that I'll shift into a weird mommy-ish role in some ways for all of them. I have a ~thing~ for taking care of people despite my harsh demeanor. So kuudere, ugugugugugu~

rofl this question

I would say Claire Redfield because I am in love with her, but I guess we wouldn't actually share too many interests and I recently discovered I am scared shitless by motorcycles, so...

tea with John Watson. beyond that? Don't really care! Anything he had to talk about would be pretty awesome.

Or Garrus. Doin' calibrations all day erry day.

WAIT NO

ACTUALLY:

Martin Crieff. because-- because planes. We could fly to someplace awesome that I wanted to see and then I would treat us to dinner somewhere reasonably inexpensive, I'm dirt poor too y'know nice.

It would be amazing.

Writer's Block: It's payday!

I'd imagine that if Istak has a million dollars the main thing he would invest in would be his local town. I'd imagine he'd use that money to pave the roads, fix the houses, buy water water buffalo, build a more permanent school house, etc... The most important thing to him is his family and community, after all. He is almost seen as some kind of leader as well. Being a very sensible guy he would probably also put some money away for times of need, especially if the farms weren't producing enough food.

With the rest of the money (imagine how much a million dollars back in the 1880s could buy!) I could imagine him buying many books and starting a small library. While he enjoyed his new life as a farmer/healer/teacher, he still missed his days in the monastery learning. It is also obvious he enjoys writing, as he kept a journal before they had left Po-on. Istak, after securing the health of community and probably buying some mental stimulants for himself, would then probably save the money. He was very sensible like that.

Writer's Block: It's payday!

If I had a million dollars, I would shut the fuck up and not tell world. Didn't you hear? The world is cruel. I'll suddenly become everybody's bestfriend. Correction. Bestest friend. Can you imagine if i had a billion? It'd be like, bestest of the bestest of the bestest of the bestest of the.. .... okay. I'm sure you get my point.

On the other hand, being me, kind hearted, I would donate $100 to wherever . Okay no, make it $50. Goodness ungracious me, I'm acting like my mother. But it's for the best. You have to understand, money doesn't come easy. Especially not from my mother. You wouldn't believe how much effort it took just to ask my mother for $10.80 to get my god damn cigarettes. I had to follow orders that I usually ignore and my brother took advantage of it and gave me 3 kicks on my thighs. It wasn't the thigh he was aiming for, it was what's in between. Lucky he's stupid.

And on the, another hand (assuming i have three hands), I would spend the money. What can you do with money other than spending them? Origami? Fuckohgeez.

PRFFTT!... ( and uh..that "prfftt" is not an acronym for anything. It's the sound of an expression of my personal feeling. It's like "duh", "haizzz", "oinnkkk", "ouhhh yeah babeh!!" and etc...).

Thank you. For nothing.

Psh, a lot. I was actually thinking about this earlier today.

I'd get a new car, like a super-awesome one. Dunno which.

I'd get the new video card (and bigger power supply I need to support it) I need to play Skyrim.

I'd prolly buy a house, but not have one built or anything. My million would run short quick building and outfitting a house.

I'd go all-out on a bird room for said house. And in it I'd put that cockatiel hen I want. Fiiiiire, I miss you. ;__;

My kitty would get all sorts of cool shit. XD

If I had a million dollars I would put one quarter of it into a money market or saving account of some kind to mature for my future childrens future. I would then take half of it and disperse it among as many non profit organizations that could benefit from the help. The last quarter of it I would use to make sure my mother has all she needs to live out the rest of her life in comfort as she is 100% disabled and unable to work and her Social Security is not enough to cover her bills, medications and debts. What ever was left I would use to build myself a quaint home and have enough money to live on so that I could pursue my career as a novelist and support myself until I was able to make a living from my books. Beyond that any extra money left over I would continue to use to help charitable organizations and create care bags for the homeless that contained necessities such as snacks, socks, and toiletries to disperse to my family and friends to pass out to whomever needed it most. I would also like to sponsor a home for children to increase literacy in poverty stricken areas.

The rest goes to The Mother coz she's better at saving than I am. 300k.

I would say Locke Lamora but the thought of him being an actual person that I would have to act normally to would stress me out so much I would end up going home and having stress vomits. Also I'm not so sure how well we would work. I really admire charismatic, manipulative bastards, but truth be told I am the complete opposite of that. So I have no idea why I love this character so much. Sense. It makes none.

Well, right now I'd want to spend a day with N from Poke'mon Black and White and ask him about his childhood; who his mother was, if he knew her; when he started hearing the voices of Poke'mon. 2. Pay off my child sponsorships/put money aside to do so for the rest of their childhoods/til they graduate the program.

You know, I remember hearing once that if you ask this question to a rich/well-off person that they would talk about spending it on stupid, unnecessary stuff.

Ask this question to a poor person and they'll answer you with the same answer they've been toying around in their head for YEARS. Thus, here I go:

With a million dollars, I would first buy my mom a reasonable but very nice home. I'd pay off the mortgage so she would never have to worry about it, then I'd give her a decent amount of money for furniture and whatever she wanted. Then I'd give a thousand to each of my siblings just for clothes. After, I'd invest some into... whatever builds value, stock or whatever (I have an aunt that knows about this stuff so I know she could help me).

I'd also get myself a nice apartment or a little house somewhere, get a reasonable car (no gas guzzlers or shiny-pricey ones), and enroll in college (obviously my apartment/house would be close by the college). I would definitely have a super awesome computer and I'd work on my anime/manga collection. After all that, well, I'd just put the rest of the money away. ._. I mean, I honestly wouldn't know what to do with it beyond that. Maybe finally visit Japan?

If you could spend a day with any fictional character, who would it be and what would the two of you do?
Ooh yay, my questions was picked! :D

This is actually tough for me to answer. I'm a serious entertainment buff. I've spent a good chunk of my life reading books, watching TV shows and movies.

This question came to me after hearing about a book called The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie. When I was growing up, I had the entire Little House series of books. I read them and re-read them. And I would love to spend a day with Laura Ingalls Wilder learning all the things that she did growing up, but being that she was a real person, that answer doesn't apply here.

If I could spend the entire day with a fictional character, it would probably be Charlotte Doyle, the main character in The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. This was another book I read growing up, and it fascinated me. The story is about a young woman traveling alone on a ship who ends up being falsely accused of murder, then ends up becoming a member of the ship's crew. I love the water, and I'd love to spend a day with someone, especially a woman who became a sailor at a young age and experienced all that she had. I'd want to spend the day out on the ocean, learning all I could about 17th century sailing ships and hearing stories of what happened among the crew. It would be like history coming to life, something I really enjoy.

Writer's Block: Tea for two

If you could spend a day with any fictional character, who would it be and what would the two of you do?

This is such a silly question. I can't resist.

Doctor Who, preferably the ninth doctor. I'd be back at the correct time in the afternoon, however it would likely be after several months spent running.

I could use the exercise.
awesome

Harry Dresden from The Dresden Files. Those familiar with the series will totally understand what we would do.

1) Go to Burger King and get the associated crowns there.
2) Hang out with Bob, talk literature.
3) Go to the Dojo with Murphy.
4) Go with the Alpha's and stomp some Red Court ass ( this is of course before the events of Turn Coat).
5) Spend the day gaming.

Obvious: Kazemaru from Inazuma Eleven.

There would be many things that we'd do, some are NSFW, others are simple fun like play soccer, build snowmen, play a few rounds of Gin Rummy and Canasta, have some tea/coffee and cakes and do each other's hair.

DAMN. I want to say Grant Gustin because I'm like obsessed with him right now & we would have the sex ;) but he's an actual person and his character on Glee is gay. FML. Uhhhh I'll go with Spencer from the book Suite Scarlett because he's described like a major hottie & is really funny (+ I literary JUST finished the book so he's fresh in my mind!)

P.S. It's almost holiday card season, if you want one message me your address!

There are so many from which to choose! Here is a list. If you don't know the story or the book, feel free to ask.

Dr. Selim Junz
R. Daneel Olivaw
Capt. Mikhail Polenin
Strider
Nexx Central agent Ravel
Random
John Christian Falkenberg
Dr. Charles Eppes
Dr. Daniel Jackson
(..and many others for which I have run out of time!)

While I find the character entertaining and worthy of notice, I definitely do NOT want to spend the day, nor any amount of time with John McClain. Bad things always happen to him!
